There are some very helpful people down in the 12 Step forum that can help with specific issues that come up. Is an online sponsor a good idea? Well, it's a better idea than having no help at all, but a far worse idea than finding someone local. Just depends on what you're situation is and the availability of working with someone face to face.

The AA forum has sponsors, but I believe it's a combination of phone and online interaction. I've not used the service. Just Google AA forums for more information.
