Saying hello...

If sobering up can be equated with recovery, been there done that 100 times or more. Extended sober periods from alcohol are what have escaped me. I have a feeling I'll be more eloquent in the morning, but I wanted to introduce myself.... James, a guy who can get sober, but can't stay that way.

Best wishes to you all.

The trick about staying sober is just stringing together a whole bunch of single days. Just stay sober a day at a time and keep on doing it. How badly do you want to quit for good? I've been told that when I want to be sober more than I want to drink, then I'll be able to stay sober.

AA worked for me... well the second time I decided to try it anyway.
The first time, I decided there was a lot of drinking for me to do yet.
Then I nearly lost my family and I was on a path to self destruction beyond my comprehension. I had to give it up and do whatever those with years of sobriety did.
It worked for them, now it's working for me.
All the best to you!

To both, thank you for your replies. Just having someone to talk to feels different. A life lived in booze felt like a life lived alone, I guess I'm singing to the choir. Thank you for responding.

Jim.

And thank you for the friendly hello in the chat room when I looked in... I didn't mean to be rude, it was 2 am for me and I'm not a night person. Hope you had a productive chat

I also have a hard time staying sober. I drank everyday for 13 years until last May. Since then I've been to detox three times and I struggle every day with it. At first it was difficult and I'd drink for a month or so, then stop. Then I started getting the vivitrol shot and I knew I couldn't drink for a month (well it wasn't worth drinking, believe me I tried). Now sometimes I give in and I'll drink heavy for a week or two then it hits me why I needed to stop in the first place. Right now I'm going on eight days sober without the vivitrol shot. I've also been told that if you're not ready to quit you won't and that you have to do it for yourself and not for anyone else. If you can afford it or have good insurance, the vivitrol shot is great for starting out. Campral is also good for cravings. I know I can't rely on those forever so I'm trying without those right now. Good luck.

Welcome Jim

I definitely agree there's getting sober...and then there's staying sober.
You'll find a lot of support here for both
