Sudden Strong Urge

Hello all. Had a very sudden urge to drink today. It hit me out of nowhere; one of the strongest urges I've had since I quit. I'm on day 137, and my mind kept telling me that I've done well, I have Friday night to myself, it would be nice to kick back and have some wine and watch baseball. I get occasional urges but I am able to snuff them out pretty quickly. This one kept coming back at me. I just kept telling myself, "You'll be at 20 damn weeks sober on Monday, by FAR the longest of your adult life. Do you really want to throw that away for something you KNOW you'll regret before the last glass is gone?" That did the trick, and I am now happily sitting on my couch, sober, watching TV.

I don't go to meetings, so I just wanted to say something here. For those of you struggling in your early days, just keep at it!

There might be something different going on. The changing of the seasons always brings on new reminders for me, but it can be other stuff. My emotional life was hitched to the alcohol wagon for so long

This is why you may not want to drink today.....

I'll give you a reminder why you may not want to drink today.

Feeling ashamed and embarassed all the time .

Worrying about who I fell down in front of .

Sweating profusely all the time .

Going entire days without eating and dry heaving at the sight of food .

breaking my promises.

Not remembering where I was last night or how I got home. .

Not being able to do anything without alcohol.

Anxiety!!

Lying to our children saying we are sick and can't play with them.

Being obsessed about whether 'I can or can't drink , wondering if I will have enough .Do I have enough in the house? etc.' or 'How can I get through this night without a drink?' .

Trying to remember if I did anything stupid the night before .

Waking up with that panicked feeling thinking "who did I talk to on the phone last night? .

Vomiting or dry heaves trying to brush my teeth the next morning.

No more hangovers .

Calling in sick and making excuses .

Throwing up on the side of the road .

Pregnancy scares .

No more laziness and apathy .

"Where did that bruise/injury come from?"

Fear of getting pulled over for a DUI .

Wondering why my wallet is empty .

Spending money that I don't have .

Heartburn .

Sharing a cell with a woman named Helga who is 6 ft tall and has whiskers.

Still want to drink? I didn't think so!!

Yes those sudden urges can pop up out of the blue, especially if you feel you need a reward, and once your first flush of will power relaxes a bit.
I deep breathe through them, but you have your own successful method. congratulations on avoiding a trap.

Well done on resisting. The good thing is that you'll have that memory of success to draw on in the future if another strong urge occurs. And you remind us all that syrong urges can occur, but that they will pass.

Thanks for sharing.

I am pretty darn close to having the same amount of sober time, and I practically went batty with a craving yesterday, too! I don't know what is going on...someone mentioned the change of seasons...that could be it?

All I know is it took everything I had to NOT go out for drinks (and have more at home) yesterday; I'm so glad I ordered a pizza instead and am typing here w/o a hangover.

Way to go on making a good choice. Let's hang in there even when it gets so rough!

I agree with the above....A litre of quality ice cream a day keeps the cravings away...
