Little Reminders on the Road to Recovery
Little Reminders on the Road to Recovery
I've been going for frequent long walks in my first few days. Today on my walk I saw about 25 empty half pint bottles of vodka strewn about the grass on the side of the road over a course of a couple hundred yards - obviously thrown from a vehicle. I thought to myself, someone around here is an alcoholic hiding their drinking. And I felt bad for the person, but I also felt so good inside to know that I know longer have to be that person.
I have been walking since my last dui in June of 2011....
I know in early sobriety I would go out at night and walk for hours to get out of my own head...
Other than it being my main way of transportation for the last few years, I honestly have just loved all the time I have for it..
I hope to be getting my license back soon, but forever will still be a walker..
Keep it up and enjoy..

I know exactly what you mean! The moments that up until a month and a half ago would have been a mix of compassion and shame, are now just moments of compassion. And relief, sometimes. While drinking, whenever I read about a drunk driver hurting someone, I'd shiver and feel ashamed (even though I rarely drive, and never drunk). Now when I read those stories I shiver and feel relieved that it won't happen to me!
Yeah - echoes of a past life.
When I was in college we rented a house form a fellow that was a drinker. I didn't drink at the time. We were always finding empty booze bottles buried around the yard.
