Cognative or 12 Step Rehab

I have never been to a rehab before but have now just got funding to do so. Don't get me wrong I'm shitting myself not with just the paranoia but the fact there is a possibilty of failure and relapse, I can't bear the thought of letting myself down and my lovely girlfriend, we've been through hell and back over the last 11 months but she's still so supportive and is drying for me to sort my heroin and drinking addition to become the decent loving boyfriend I know I can be, what sort of rehab do you people think is the right way to go.

My opinion is that if you have an internal locus of control, you might fare better with a cognitive behavioral program. If your locus of control is external, a 12 Step program may suit you better. Different folks stroke differently than other folks stroke.

All that matters is that YOU WANT TO ChANGE YOU.

You have to want to DO THE WORK

I have never seen any program fail, as long as You work it with everything you got..

I am a proud member of AA and wouldnt be here to write this with it..

You can be free.

I've done both and for me the Cognitive Behavioural approach had more benefit, but that is just me. I think the fact that it was 6 month as opposed to 28 days for the 12 step program was a big factor though. Its hard to say which is best for any particular individual. I'd suggest speaking to staff from different programs, be honest with them and then go with your gut reaction.

I did not do rehab, buy I truly believe that motivation is what will make whatever rehab or recovery program you choose work for you. How badly do you want this to work?

Would CB be better for some one who has little spiritual faith?

Welcome to SR Jamwad

I don't have any experience of rehab but use a combination of secular and 12 step recovery. I think that the 12 step stuff is more emotional and the CBT type stuff is more rational. I needed both. Maybe go with your gut instinct. I am sure both would offer adequate support x

Hi Jamwad

I've never done rehab...or CBT or 12 step...but I've seen successes from all approaches

Why not ring around a few places, google...speak to a few people - get a feel for whats out there and go with whichever way makes most sense to you?

best of luck

D
