Yets

I just left an AA mtg and had a friend tell me something that I suspect I'll be thinking about for quite some time:

My life is a series of yets.
  1. I haven't lost my job
  2. I haven't lost my house
  3. I haven't lost my husband
  4. I haven't lost my driver's license
  5. I haven't been to jail
  6. I haven't died
  7. I don't have health problems

Crazy.

Amazing to think of those things. I also found out that my friend who committed suicide, used to attend the same mtgs I now attend. Kind of freaky. I have been lurking there for a few years, I wonder if we crossed paths and didn't know it.

LOL, well, I think it can apply to a lot of things. Not that those things won't happen to someone, but it doesn't have to happen because you were drinking and putting yourself out there, increasing the chances tenfold.

To me, time really doesn't matter. If you drank in the past, it's over and done. Nothing can change past history. The future hold no reality because it is only a fabrication of our minds of what may or may not be. It is this very moment that counts. If you are not drinking, you are equal to the one that has not drank for many years...you both are sober. The more you dwell on how long or how short of a time you haven't drank. IMHO, can keep the cravings alive within you. Strive to forget you ever drank. Don't dwell on the thought of remaining sober today. Push any thought of alcohol out of your head. You won't drink if it is not there (in your mind.) Breathe deeply in the reality of now. Spend your time enjoying being sober at this moment, then repeat, and again, and again...

Those are good 'yets' that many of us hear in meetings in early recovery.

There are some more that we hear as we continue to stay sober:

1. Haven't had a job promotion, yet.
2. Haven't found a better job, yet
3. Haven't bought a newer/better/bigger home, yet.
4. Haven't bought a new hybrid vehicle, yet.
5. Haven't gotten a pass port, yet
6. Haven't taken a cruise, yet.
7. Haven't traveled abroad, yet.
8, Haven't had a child or grandchild, yet

etc etc etc

You stick around, work your program of recovery and there are many 'great yets' to come.

In the past 30+ years, I have bought and sold several homes. I have made some very endearing friendships that I no way could have had drunk. I have had 6 grand children born and they all love gramma.

I have been blessed with being able to work with many over the years. I was able to go back to school and get a degree. I was able to start my own business and be a success. I have traveled abroad, and hope to do some more.

Anything you dream of to do or enjoy is possible, with footwork, continued sobriety, and hard work.

J M H O

Love and hugs,

ps: and yes I still do get to a meeting now and then, lol

I love this thread, what a lot of great ways to stay motivated. I'm very relieved I have quit drinking before those 'yets' caught up with me, and they would have eventually. I'm grateful that my health problems can be reserved. Thank you all!

25 years ago I had a problem relating IN to the people in the AA meetings because I had "not yet" had those bad things happen to me.

Today, I can count my "not yets" on my fingers....I had to do it my way, which obviously didn't work well!

Just stay stopped!

I had all those bad yets, well except the death.

For today I am grateful and sober.
