ANZAC Day
ANZAC Day
today, 25th of April, is the day we Australians and New Zealanders remember those who serve, have fought and sometimes died for our countries in our armed forces.
It's not a day to glory in war, but a day to say to thanks to those many men and women who have stepped up and fought for what they believe in, so that we might be free today.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest We Forget.

Thanx Dee.
My Dad was in WW2 and we always thought his stories were cool and his adventures awesome. Now that I have two boys in the military its not so cool anymore.
I have the utmost respect for ANY person involved in unfelfishly protecting a country.
We honor these people once a year -families mourn their loss daily.

Thank you Dee for you and yours! A little known fact I'd like to mention here when it comes to the honor of Australians. I myself did not know this until I visited a war cemetary in Pusan, South Korea. I lived in S. Korea for 7 years and learned a great deal there. The Australian military lost a measurable percentage of it's adult male population in that God foresaken war known as the "forgotten war", i.e. the Korean war. More than ANY other country. I cannot imagine being in the Australian military and ask/told to go to some hellhole country 9,000 miles away I've never even heard of! But, they did not question, the went, fought, and died. Most S. Koreans still remember this and Australians are held in Very high honor there! The heroism and bravery of the Austrailan military is legend among U.S. forces.
My hat is off and my head is bowed to all Australian Military Forces!

Admiration and thanks to those brave souls willing to take up the fight - their sacrifice is humbling. I'm in awe of them, and eternally grateful.
Like EmeraldRose, my dad was in WWII - and mom was a WAC then too. The Aussies & New Zealanders they met were legendary in our house - the finest and bravest of people.

Anzac day has a special meaning to me. For some reason in 1986 it seemed to get in more than I thought.
I wrote this song ,
Mrs Carter down the road , has been alone since 45
Raised three children on her own , they all grew up fine.
Her husband gave the gift that I find hard to comprehend
Fought for all our freedom , till his life came to an end.
Chorus....1
And the diggers march along the road, It only takes a while
The children wave their flags at them and the parents mostly smile
Followed by the young and strong our future does embrace
Proud to be Australian , a tear runs down my face
Then they lay the wreaths , we say a prayer , and we wander home alone
How do we say thank you , to those who never came home
An the leaves fall down onto the ground , and the Autumn sun shines bright
I lay awake and think about a little more that night.
Chorus..2
V, And I wonder if the petty arguments , have any worth
The pain and anguish of a death , the miracle of birth
The smile that warms my face and soul to see my children play
A special place here in my heart , for every Anzac day .
Chorus..3
Great thread well done Dee

Someone asked me why I posted this here in Newcomers...
my Uncle was a garrulous 17yo when he went to Vietnam....he was never the same again when he came back.
He drank to excess...lost his family, wife, kids...eventually he took his own life.
As a a child, he scared me. He could snap like that.
I didn't like him.
I didn't get it - but I do now.
