The Power of Now

Took Anna's advice and picked up a copy of, "The Power of Now" this weekend.

Wondering if anyone has read it. Thoughts? Are there enough people that would be interested in a discussion of it?

Regardless, it really is a good read. I'm a fast reader, but this one takes awhile, it probably should take awhile just so you can take everything in.

Uh, yeah, the concepts in that book and in Eastern philosophy in general have been crucial in my recovery (and my life in general). Mindfulness, living in the present moment, the illusions of the mind and the self...

It's probably time for a re-read actually

It's amazing to me the gifts sobriety has given me that I never expected. The things you mentioned are just a few.

Really trying to understand Meditation. I'm not very good at it, but I am trying!

I have it. But I havent really read it. I started too and stopped halfway last year. I should take it with me.
I have heard good things. I will read it and talk about it.
I really need to start incorporating more meditation and stuff like that in my routine. It is very helpful.

I think it's one of those books you gotta read, put it down, reread, think some more, then go on to the next sentence.

I do mean that in a very good way.

No, I know exaactly what you mean. Thats basically what happened to me. Just never picked it back up again. He has another book that came out after this one. I forgot the name of it. I started reading that one too while I was gone last year. But Ididnt finish it because it had to go back.
Meditation seems a little difficult at first.
It seems like alot of concentration for something thats suppose to be calming and stuff. LOL
But I cant have it dead quiet. I need some music. And I cant sit in the proper meditative position. I just get comfortable somehow and close my eyes and just let my mind run the course. Then I look at all the awareness and everything.
Alot less pressure that way for me.

LF: We wouldn't have remembered it if we had read it during our drinking days anyway, right?

Many times would finish a book at night and have not a clue how it ended the next morning.

I'm really glad to see people here are aware of it. I read it twice, but I started it again over the weekend. I was always drunk when I read it before. I still "got it", but it sure makes a lot more sense now.

Even with the problems I've had, that book has changed my life.

I have The Power Of Now and A New Earth. Still reading A New Earth.
There is another Tolle book, Stillness Speaks. It's good for morning meditative reading. Short readings on various concepts.

Thanks for the link, VC. Looks like it has a few fans, here.

Dumb question. Is meditation something that you truly work at over time and you finally 'get it'. Clearing my mind is like chewing Pop Rocks.

I'll get there.

Editing to add: I also picked up "Meditation for Beginners" Haven't cracked it open yet, though.

There are so many good books out there about finding your innerself, enlightenment, and eastern philosophy. Mindfulness, gratitude and meditation(or I call it quieting my mind) has changed my life. Happy reading.

Wonderful to see all the people interested in meditation as a sobriety and life aid. Thx VC for sharing the link.
