Question Are sore muscles or leg cramps a symptom of withdrawl?

Day 4 for me and I have been able to sleep OK the past couple of nights, but during the day my hips, lower back and calves ache like I have been exercising (and I have not been doing anything out of the norm)..

I have been drinking for 20+ years - the last 10 years pretty heavy - 1 to 2+ bottles of wine a night - give or take..... I had bloodwork done two months ago and they said it was normal..

Just wondering if any else experienced this type of thing - or other things???

It's not been my experience Fritz, although I was very fatigued.
I hope you'll consider seeing a Dr if you're worried about it

I got cramps in my calves because of a lack of salt in my diet....I still get them sometimes. I ate a lot of salty foods when I was drinking so thats possibly why I got them in early recovery. Lots of sushi usually fixes it.

What I have noticed during sobriety is that my PMT symptoms are a lot worse - this includes muscle pain/tension from the waist down particularly in the thigh region. I feel like ive run a marathon for a couple of days then it just goes away! Im assuming from your avatar youre a woman so this could possibly be the case for you too!

Hey Fritz,
I had that. I had muscle aches all over. On my 7th day of sobriety I sat for a long time in a steam room and that sure felt good. I think for me, the anxiety associated with the withdraws might have made me tense up. Who knows? Good luck to you. : )

I suffered with restless leg syndrome...all throughout my drinking days...and for awhile it was still bad, but i haven't had any problems for about 3 months now...

Hi Fritz,
muscle cramps, particularly in my calves were quite common for me but went away after a week or so.
Your body has become accustomed to having a chemical regularly administered for the last two decades, it should be no surprise that a sudden removal of this will cause withdrawal symptoms. However the body is extremely adaptable and will very soon recover and start producing its own chemicals that were subdued/unnecessary because alcohol took their place.
As already said if you continue to experience symptoms then your DR is the best person to consult. As regards your "bloodwork", were they made aware of what they should be looking for?

You might want to have a doctors opinion
just to ease your mind.....

But unless you are going to be totally honest
with him/her about your past drinking history
a doctor won't know what test to do with your blood work.

You did drink a lot since your last blood screening.

Drink a lot of water...and call your doctor please.
