Smile Thanks from behind the scenes ...

After about 10 years of drinking more than I have known I should, I am making a formal effort to leave that behind me. Alcohol has always been a funky thing in my family, not that it was very present growing up and certainly not it excess, but somehow it was loaded with guilt (must be a mid-west thing). But I have been very aware of health, social, and ecological consequences, and frankly, I don't want to be 20 years down the road with a failing liver or with terrible skin, or a broken life ... I'm healthy, productive and life is good. Leaving alcohol in my wake will make it better.

I am of the school: If you think you have a problem, you do. Most would say I was being overly dramatic taking this step. I don't know if people will really notice I have given up alcohol. But I will know.

It can screw up my sleep. It can put me in a fog the next day. Plus, I am vegan and (tho I know you can buy vegan wines/beers) most companies use animal products to clear the beverage. Plus! I live in a place with limited capacity to recycle glass, so any bottles go in the landfill. So I have been contributing to animal suffering and the planet's trash problem through my tippling ... Guilt! -- or rather, more inspiration to stop!

Anyway, I found this website and have been visiting the posts. (Brave people, thank you for sharing!) It's been six days since I last drank -- I typically did 2-3 glasses of wine perhaps twice per week. But I have found that as I approach what someone has called "the witching hour" I have tools to work with -- I read or think about the posts, I think about the animals/trash, and I move on ... I make a good meal, and enjoy being present.

It's such a lovely day today and I feel great. And that is in large part of the inspiration I have gleaned from you all as I have been reading posts behind the scenes. Thank you.

Peace,

Skeeter2

I know where you're coming from. I'm vegan and somehow it seems being vegan and an alcoholic just doesn't make sense. I mean I'm doing something that I believe makes a small change in the world and yet I'm doing this to my body. It just doesn't make sense.
