Well, it finally happened.... ;)
I used to say, alot, "No doctor ever prescribed anyone alcohol..."
But my mother (83) who has depression and anxiety issues, was recently told by her new psychiatrist that she should quit taking her ativan and drink wine instead.
I checked around with some psychiatrist friends of mine and they told me this new psychiatrist has a wine cellar, loves wine, and thinks everyone should drink wine.
From now on I have to say, "No doctor in his right mind ever prescribed anyone alcohol..."

((Tommy)) When I was a nurse, we actually had a patient that we did give a glass of wine to each night. It was years before my own addiction and I never even thought about it, at the time...you just reminded me of it. Now I'm wondering what the dr's reasoning was behind it? hmmmmmmm

OMG, I seriously can't believe that but unfortunately I can believe it. That is upsetting. I would report him. I am mad at doctors because they missed my alcoholism but none of them encouraged it or prescribed it; they just ignored it. Sounds like he has a problem himself.
My great grandma was prescribed one glass of red after dinner by her doctor. This was thirty years ago! She wasn't an alcoholic or addict. She was a good Baptist lady of the old school. She really learned to love that one glass after dinner!
In this day and age I am still shocked by how little training in the disease of alcoholism/addiction many doctors actually get. I bet that doctor had very little experience with treating anxiety too. I am willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt. He probably isn't an alcoholic/addict and it's hard for him to relate.
Would it be possible to speak to this doctor or write him a letter explaining your concern? He may have no idea your mom is an addict. Those of us in our disease tend to protect it and he may not have all the facts.
I don't take a moral stance against alcohol. It's just not an option for me.

Lenina
