Question Wow..i cannot...ty laurie6781

She shared this with me.. wow i love it. Thank you!

Now hear this:

YOU cannot make him drink.

YOU cannot keep him sober.

STRESS is a part of daily life.

He has been given tools, if he uses them or not is HIS CHOICE.

If he is going to drink again he will and there is not a DAMN THING you can do about it.

DO NOT start walking around on egg shells. This is HIS PROBLEM.

All you have to do is work on YOU. Set your boundaries and be able to stick to them.

ie "If you drink or bring alcohol into the house you are GONE."

I don't remember if you have children or not.

ie "You will NOT be intoxicated or have any alcohol in your system around our child(ren). You will not drive our child(ren) with any alcohol in your system, if you do you are GONE."

There are no guarantees on recovery, I wish I could tell you there are. It is a long road. He has 6 months in a very 'protected envionment.'

There is a saying around these boards:

"Prepare for the worst and Hope for the best."

Yes, i have kids. I have told him that... that i cannot tolerate any drugs in the home, any drunkeness around my children, no abuse (yelling, arguing, God forbid physical violence) around them or to them.

As stark as that is, it really IS good advice....and advice that it took me a long time to believe.

Thanks for sharing it here, it's a good reminder that we truly are powerless over the addict.

Hugs
