That's me. 40 years old, the last 25 as a functional alcoholic. Great family, great career...I have it all, but am not happy. So...I'm trying out this sobriety for really the first time, to see how I feel without alcohol. Then the Dr. and I can determine if this has been the cause of my depression, or if I need some additional help. I wasn't going to ask a psychiatrist to give me medication that might not do anything but mask the symptoms of alcoholism or even make them worse.
Glad I found this place.

Glad you're here Roadhunter. Our history's are similar. I went into AA at the age of 41 after 27 years of high-functioning alcoholism. I gave a lot of my life away. Marriage, home, etc. Sobriety has given me more than I ever dreamed was possible.
Hope you stick with it and discover a plan for your recovery. This is a great place to start.

Hi and Welcome,
I'm glad you have decided to live a sober life.
You're right that alcohol is a depressant, and as you recover, your depression may life. For me, the depression came long before the drinking, so I need to take medication.
Take a look around and get comfortable!

Hi Roadhunter. A new day for you - that's wonderful. Like Astro, I gave many things away due to my dependency. I never saw what it was doing to me until late in the game, and finally finding SR was the push I needed to get well. The stories, the wealth of information, the daily struggles you will find here will be of great value. Congratulations on recognizing what needs to be done. Sending love & hope your way.
