Therapist recommendation in NJ?

I'm located in the center of New Jersey. Can anyone recommend a good therapist whose had experience with dealing with parents/families of addicts? I've tried 1 or 2 and their experience seems to be that they've read a Naranon booklet, though they did try hard.

thanks...

My therapist, whose specialty is substance abuse, was referred by my daughter's therapist. I know that doesn't help much, but I never would have thought to seek out someone who treats substance abusers. He's been a Godsend to me.

Have you tried calling local rehabs for a referral? An addictionologist might be a good resource as well.

Contact Hazelden in NYC and ask for a referral.

Dad,
I'd love to know this as well. I'm north of you, and wanted to go to a counselor myself. I'll be following this thread.

carrier clinic in belle mead nj has free weekend programs (you can just show up) that include a group theraphy session for the family members. It is intended for family members of patients, but it is open to all, and they welcome all participants. It is run by the addiction councilors. I found it very helpful. My daughter was a patient there several times, and I attended about 7 sessions.

Here's a link with good guideline as to how to find a therapist. If you're dual diagnosed, with a mental disability as well, this one will serve you well.
Finding a therapist or psychiatrist
Here's another from Psychology Today.
http://therapists.psychologytoday.co...ew+Jersey.html
It lists each city and county.
And here's one specific to substance abuse.

Good luck to you.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. Just made an appt. with someone from the Psychology Today link who over 20 yrs. experience with drug users and families. He's 15 minutes from work and is in my insurance network.

Great forum, great people.
