I think you got a low self oppinion man

I see you standing all by yourself
Unable to express the pain of your distress
You withdraw deeper inside
You alienate yourself
And everybody else
They wonder whats on your mind
They got so tired of you
And your self ridicule
They wrote you off and left you behind

You sleep alone at night
You never wonder why
All this bitterness wells up inside you
You always victimize
So you can criticize yourself
And all those around you

The hatred you project
Does nothing to protect you
You leave yourself so exposed
You want to open up
When someone says
Lighten up
You find all your doors closed
Get yourself a break from self rejection
Try some introspection
And you just might find
Its not so bad and anyway
At the end of the day
All you have is yourself and your mind
The self hatred that blinds you
Binds you grinds you keeps you down
The world falls down around you
You build up walls around you
You wear disgust like a crown

If you could see the you that I see
When I see you seeing me
Youd see yourself so differently
Believe me

I know the self doubt that runs inside your mind
I know the self that treats you so unkind

If you could see the you that I see
When I see you
You would see things differently
I assure you

These lyrics (Rollins Band, Low Self Opinion) struck me as describing a lot of addicts pretty damn well. The way drugs can crush our self image, make us bitter and angry and hostile outwardly while we feel empty and lonely inside.

It seems to me that it's either a HUGE lyrical coincidence or many musicians are in recovery.

Just thought I'd start a thread for people to share lyrics they've written or found that speak to them and their recovery.

I likes me some Henry. I seen Black Flag a bunch back in the day and the Henry Rollins band too. I think Henry's neck is gonna explode one day.

Joel--thanks so much for posting those lyrics--they are so true. Actually as I was reading I was wondering if you wrote them since they are so true to an addict. We have a thread going someplace where people were putting up lyrics. I'll go searching for it and let you know. No problem wtih having another one though! Thank you for the post!

NOrth--were you the one that had posted that other song about men and war with the youtube link? I cant find it. If not, do you remember seeing it on here? I also posted the link to Pink's sober
on youtube--the song is Sober--it's on her new album. Another song I love is Let Me Be Me by 3 doors down. Two great songs. Pink's song is obvious that it's about addiction, but the Let me be me song is probably about love, but very easy to apply to an addicts life-is great.

That song is called Hero Of War by Rise Against..My youngest daughter just got the pleasure of attending their concert in Seattle...
I like Pink too...I like when she does "Me and Bobby McGee"...
Not as good as Joplin..but a good tribute nonetheless....Pink has a great voice,

I liked Black Flag..their music is not something I can sit still and listen to!! I was moshin around the kitchen doing dishes when I listened to them...energizing music...good ****..Put em on my music list...

Wow.

I know this part so well

The hatred you project
Does nothing to protect you
You leave yourself so exposed

Henry is not an addict, to the best of my knowledge, he never was. He's probably been the most 'anti-drug' punk-rock icon in history. He's like the Ted Nugent of punk, afa being anti-drugs goes. He's not nearly as much of a dick as TN, though ...

But clearly ... he knows what drugs do to people, and the person that served as inspiration for this song could well have been an addict, that's for sure ...

Henry dabbled with booze and dope at a young age. He just doesn't care for drunks and dopers. Henry's a good guy. He's preachy but show me an entertainer who ain't. I happen to really like Ted Nugent too. I saw him back around 78 or 79 or so and that dude is a complete maniac on stage and he can rip a guitar. I don't mind Ted's politics as I agree with a lot of it. I met Henry a couple of times back when he was with Black Flag and then again with the Henry Rollins band. The boy's got opinions for sure. As far as anti-drug punk rock icons I'd say no. That would be Minor Threat's Ian MacKaye.

This one's by tool, it's called "stinkfist". Maynard kind twists in sexual themes but I think the real topic is pretty damn clear

**************************************************

Something has to change.
Un-deniable dilemma.
Boredoms not a burden
Anyone should bear.

Constant over stimulation numbs me
But I wouldnt want you
Any other way.

Just, not enough.
I need more.
Nothing seems to satisfy.
I said, I dont want it.
I just need it.
To breathe, to feel, to know Im alive.

Finger deep within the borderline.
Show me that you love me and that we belong together.
Relax, turn around and take my hand.

I can help you change
Tired moments into pleasure.
Say the word and well be
Well upon our way.

Blend and balance
Pain and comfort
Deep within you
Till you will not want me any other way.

But, its not enough.
I need more.
Nothing seems to satisfy.
I said, I dont want it.
I just need it.
To breathe, to feel, to know Im alive.

Knuckle deep inside the borderline.
This may hurt a little but its something youll get used to.
Relax. slip away.

Something kinda sad about
The way that things have come to be.
Desensitized to everything.
What became of subtlety?

How can it mean anything to me
If I really dont feel anything at all?

Ill keep digging till,
I feel something.

Elbow deep inside the borderline.
Show me that you love me and that we belong together.
Shoulder deep within the borderline.
Relax. turn around and take my hand.

I just posted this somewhere else but I forgot where. Another great Pink song that relates to myself and probably a lot of others is, "I'm a Hazard to Myself" I don't know how to do the little link thingie so I am sorry but you can get it off of YouTube or Limewire if you like it.
