Being human
Hello friends in recovery. Each day I'm on SR, as I read the posts in the Newcomers forum I'm filled with emotion. This morning I’m sitting in my office getting all choked up and teary-eyed. So many of our posts contain the words "I'm sorry" and "I drank/used again". As I read these posts I can't help but wonder how often we feel ashamed, saddened, and disgusted with ourselves and our actions. Sometimes it brings tears to my eyes and makes my heart heavy to try and comprehend how much pain we try to take upon ourselves. But that's what we're here for, to love and support each other through our addictions.
How often have we heard someone share that they thought they were Superman when they drank or used? In recovery I'm finding that I'm nowhere even close to being bulletproof and I never will be. I'll still have moments when I think about taking a drink, and I'll admit that there are brief moments when I ask myself if this is even worth it, I consider checking out on life. But those moments always pass, and I'm reminded that my Higher Power hasn't left me, He's still looking out for my best interest's, and He's brought me back to a point of faith.
Bear with me, I'm going somewhere with my rambling........
Let's take a moment today (find a quiet place in your heart) to remember that we're human, and it's OK to fail and fall sometimes. I'm not immune to pain, my past, my addictions, or anything else that brought me to this place in my life. If I was I wouldn't be here. And I'm not impervious to slips or relapses. I've only got this moment, this day. If I go to bed without taking a drink I'll wake up tomorrow and have the gift of a chance to do it all over again. For that I am truly grateful, and I know almost every one of you are too.
Please read this short meditation and carry it with you today as a reminder that you're only human. And remember that we're all beautiful in spite of the flaws that we work on every day.

You are reading from the book Today's Gift
Kindness and intelligence don't always deliver us from the pitfalls and traps.
--Barbara Grizzuti Harrison
Being human means we'll have hard times along with pleasant ones. Whether with friends, at school, or at home, we'll find reasons for sadness or anger as easily as for laughter. In every part of our lives, we're offered just what we need for growth.
Being the best we know how to be doesn't mean we'll escape confusion or pain. Through the troubling times we learn to trust in a Higher Power; we learn patience; we learn to let go and let God decide outcomes. The troubling times offer us growth and serenity, our keys to happiness.
What hidden gifts will I find in today's troubles?

Thanks, Astro. I think we all need to be reminded that it's "progress, not perfection".
This is from my Hazelden Keep It Simple, March 25th:

The artist who aims for perfection in everything achieves it in nothing.

Trying to be perfect shows we're ashamed of being human. In recovery, we accept that we're human. We try to be the best human we can be.
Higher Power, help me give up trying to be perfect. Help me always keep in mind that I'm human--which means, I'm not perfect.
Part of being human is making mistakes. Today, I'll see my mistakes as chances to learn.

Thank you, Astro. That is a wonderful post, and I really needed to read that today. I've actually copied it and saved it so I can go back and read it later, because I know it will come in handy again.
