Had a really bad night
Had a really bad night
Well, I started drinking, again. I was sober for two months, the first part of this year. I decided to get cleaned back up and check myself into detox last night.
I called my girlfriend about midnight last night after having sixteen beers to take me to the emergency room. When we got to the hospital, they took us back and that's when the problems started.
The wait was ridiculous, there was only one other person waiting in the room beside us. He said he had been waiting for four hours. I said something about how long it was taking and one of the nurses gave me an attitude.
Then about four nurses came up and they said I needed to calm down. I was not being rude. Then another nurse comes up and escorts me a and my girlfriend to the door. When we got to the front desk I told the receptionist I needed to make sure my insurance was not billed for the visit.
The supervisor came out with an attitude and said we had not been waiting that long and thats what happens when you wait to go to ER late at night. We went back in and waited an additional two hours for someone to see me. A counselor came in and ask me some questions. She said she could have me committed. I thought the best thing to do was leave.
Please help. What do I need to do? Should I go to my family doctor and see if he can prescribe something to help with the withdrawals? Health care sucks in America.

I had a similiar experience at the ER. I decided to go in after a year of drinking vodka on a daily basis. I waited in the ER for 8 hours. By then the withdrawls kicked in and I started having DT's. Once I got back there they gave me Ativan and sent me home, while I was hallucinating. I got home and had DT's all night long. I'm lucky to be alive after that. How could they send me home when I was hallucinating at the hospital? It was awful!! Strange they said they could commit you. That doesn't sound right at all. Get to your doctor ASAP. They will probably perscribe you meds to get you through the withdrawls. Let us know how it goes.
For sure see your doctor. And unfortunately health care in the US does suck, especially when the only place to go is the ER. I'm sorry your experience was so bad. Please call your doctor soon to see about getting some better, and immediate help.:ghug3
Are you talking about a regular hospital ER? Is there a medical detox center anywhere around you? When I was ready to detox and start my recovery, I googled alcohol treatment centers in my area. I found several and finally settled on one about 15 miles away. I called them and asked if they had a bed available and they did. I had a friend drive me there and while the admission process took about 4 hours, it wasn't really that bad since I was still pretty drunk when I got there. Good luck to you, and I do hope you will seek out medical treatment for your detox. It is so much easier than going it alone.
I went to a walk-in clinic and the doctor gave me a prescription for klonopin to help with the withdrawals. Alcohol is a powerful drug and addiction. The klonopin is helping with the anxiety. I was sober and feeling great for about two months. I can't believe I'm starting all over again.
I wondering whether being committed might have been a good thing. Maybe it would have helped? Being committed doesn't mean you're crazy, maybe it's just what they need to do to get you into the rehab unit? At least you would get the medication and help you need. Maybe a short stay in the hospital would be what you need now to get through the dts. An emergency petition (used by medical professionals to get a short term commitment) is only for 48 hours unless you show further signs of being a danger to yourself or someone else. I don't know, but maybe a short hospital stay might be good now.

However we get recovery and get well is a great thing, our common bond is this dis ease of addiction and our common solution is recovery however we find it and however we do it.
I try to keep myself out of the way so that healing and recovery moves through me and my life.

so what do you like, what are you willing to do, other than drink?
Questions I had to ask myself and answer in early days.
Its still very much about 'willingness'
Nothing changes if nothing changes.
I try to embrace change even when it makes me cringe at first, cos I know its all ok.

Yes, it was a hospital ER. Tomorrow will be day two, I think I can do this on my own. If it gets too bad I will go back to the ER. I've went through this before, I can do it again.
