Thinking of moving my allegiance to this site.

I've been in a much more active site, over 20,000 members. But it is mostly an AA hell, for me.
I'm not a 12-stepper, and practically everyone there is. I am drowning in platitudes, and slogans, and prayers.

Last night, I wrote a very sharp "Blog" that might be taken in a most offensive darkness.
I was not personal, or crude, but it occurred to me that I might standing in the way of my recovery.
I do not like someone saying, "Congratulations for xx days sober!"

So I hope to make some alliances in this spot, so that staying away from trouble becomes the new habit that sticks.

Peace to all.
Sylvester

AA isn't for everyone - esp the 12 step program. I've always had some rather callous opinions of their ways. It's like you're either with us, or you're against us, so you must be assimilated - so sayeth the borg.

Welcome Sly,

We support all people who are recovering and I'm glad you found us.

And, actually I think you will find this Newcomers Forum very active.

I don't know the other site, but it happens everywhere. Here too. I do know that part of sobriety is serenity. Not having control of what others do and say and not letting it bother you when it happens.

"Congratulations for xx days sober!"
Those XXs remind me of the Whiskey Bottles in the Tom and Jerry Cartoons.

Welcome Sylvester

So how many days do you have? *LOL*

You will find the AAers here as well and the slogans, and the quotes from the BB, and you will even find some of us who will quote scripture from time to time.
The world is full of people with different ideas and opinions.
You can write sharp blogs all day long but you will find that doesn't change others. We need to adjust ourself so that the actions and words of others don't get to us like they did in the past.
Tolerance does not mean acceptance. You may not agree with AA but we do need be tolerant of what others believe.

Let me change my question above...

So how is your way working for you?

Share what you find works for you.

Welcome to SR

Welcome to SR.

Im pretty unaccepting of AA and the steps, but Im not having much luck on my own. All I know is that we need to find what works, whatever that is and stick to it.

I hope you feel at home here. Good luck and keep posting.

Hi, welcome to SR

I agree with change and the others re tolerance and finding a way that is right for you (we say 'it's horses for courses' here in the UK!!).

Not many days sober myself, and not my 1st attempt. I am just starting therapy which I am hopeful about.

It's really useful geting people's advice, support etc, no matter what recovery treatment they are using. Some really great folk here..

Good luck, hope you keep coming back.

Welcome to SR! It's good to have you here.

For me, slogans and platitudes that come from the hearts of people who care about me are always welcome.

Here, we embrace our diversity instead of quarreling our differences. That can make all the difference.

Welcome to SR.

Yep...I'm one of those! Hope you won't hold it against me...but, everything I learned about staying sober over 28 years ago, I learned in the rooms of AA for over 20 years. Since I'm no longer able to attend regular meetings, I come here to "keep my memory green" and to pass on my "experience, strength, and hope" (more of those annoying platitudes).

Strangely enough, I still remember (and repeat) phrases I learned as a child in Sunday School...they've helped me to live a "good" life, just as the repetition of AA slogans/platitudes have helped me to live a "sober" life. Guess that makes me "good and sober."
