Some tips please
hey becky, nice to meet you. i'm the mom of an alcoholic, so i don't have that first hand experience with cravings. i've heard folks say that they call a supportive friend (this is where aa or some recovery group helps). some folks get some exercise, drink water, chew gum, suck on hard candy, read and post here, read recovery literature.
i know when my daughter is working a recovery program, she makes a list of things to do each day (need to do, would like to do, etc) and then really sticks to that list on the tough days.
keep reaching out on sr. it's quiet on weekends, but others will be along.
hugs and support, k

One on the biggest aides for me during that first week of sobriety was just coming here and making a post about it. There's always someone around to lend a hand.
Then once I started going to AA meetings, if I bad urge came up, I would check to see when the next meeting was that day and just fight the urge until meeting time.
But pretty much, do anything but drinking. The busier I am, the less I think about it.

Reading and posting here helps me the most.
Other things that have helped...
Taking a walk.
Having a cup of tea.
Cooking.
Doing a crossword puzzle.
Taking a shower or bath.
Curling up with a good book.
Drinks that I like to have while my husband's drinking...
VIRGIN Mary with lots of horseradish, tobasco, celery seed, worcestershire...
Diet tonic water with lots of ice and slices of lemon or lime
Things to avoid...
Being tired
Watching T.V.
My husband -- only when he's drinking...

Glad you asked....
I timed my cravings. They were 5-7 minutes in duration.
Not too long too endure discomfort.
Soooo....I took action.
Walk around ... brush teeth...drink cold water...a Lifesaver
Within 2 weeks...the lessened in both time and intensity.
By 2 or so months .... they vanished.
Now...were they mental or physical?
Darn if I know. Nor do I care.

This is not a universal idea, but it's helped me greatly:
When I got sober this time, I designated a "sober place". I go there whenever I feel like drinking. It's relaxing, peaceful, and reminds me of all the reasons why I've gone sober. It's also anchored in my mind as a place that takes the desire for alcohol OUT of me, which always makes me feel better during the walk back to my car and the subsequent drive home.
My first post on these forums was about whether or not people used this kind of concept, and though it's not a widespread idea...I LOVE my sober place. It's helped me endlessly.
Welcome, and I hope you find any and every means of sobriety that works for you!
All the best,

[QUOTE=beckybeagle;1667568]What do you do if you feel urge to drink? Is there any other helpful tips to distract you from drinking?
As part of my quest toward permanent sobriety, and in an effort to have something alternative to do to if the urge to drink strikes, I adopted a rescued puppy. Now, if I think about drinking I can: Hold him, hug him, snuggle him, play with him, walk him, brush him, feed him, try to teach him new tricks, clean up his little messes, talk to him, give him a bath, or just enjoy watching his amusing efforts to try to make friends with my cranky cat.
Now, I know that suggestion wouldn't work for everyone, but considering your screen-name, I thought it might work for you.
Good luck!!!!
