Nyquil
I'm sick. I have a horrible cold and feel like crap. I just took 2 tablespoons of Nyquil without even thinking about it. I just want to be able to get some sleep tonight!!
So, is that ok? That I took the Nyquil? Or have I now fell off the wagon? lol

Get some sleep. I hope you feel better.
Hugs,

Well, When I was sick I used nyquil. I don't consider that falling off. I was SICK. I couldn't sleep. I tried sudafed nighttime medicine. Didn't work as well, meaning, I woke up several times from my coughing. So I went back to nyquil the next night. As long as you're not abusing it, you're strictly using it as a medication, I don't see why you shouldn't use it.

I agree with Fraankie.
Knowingly using something with alcohol in it is not in MY program. That includes the following with alcohol in it: Nyquil, mouthwash, toothpaste, flavor additives/food coloring, expensive chocolates (Whitman Samplers and the like), and near beer. Additionally, I don't drink "fake champagne" either. Why? My sobriety and way of life are too important to risk doing anything that may tempt me back into the vicious cycle of addiction. Just not worth it for me, today.

I dont use nyquil because i used to abuse cough medicine for that popular little drug called DXM. (stupidest thing i EVER did) I use alcohol mouthwash and toothpaste with scope in it. I drink fake champagne on rare occasions like at weddings and stuff. the toothpaste and mouthwash dont bother me because i spit it out anyways and it isnt for getting drunk its for good oral hygeine. Fake champagne probably doesnt bother me because i never had real champagne in any of my time drinking.
But i agree with friendofbill, It's all about your motive for using it. If you were using it to get that feeling, then i would really examine your program. but if you were really and truly sick, it's okay to take a recommended dose.

I've taken cough syrup with alcohol in it. I prefer to use the stuff that's alcohol free but whatever works, works. Someone mentioned motives. That's important!! If you were copping a buzz or hoping to, there's a problem IMO. I generally don't use anything but ibuprophen but to each his own. Only you know whether or not you are abusing the stuff. If you're not, not a problem. I have a pigeon who won't take anything at the dentist because he's afraid of becomming addicted. I think he's nuts to sit there in pain. To each his own.

I did not feel good and wanted to get some sleep. That was my only motive. I took the Nyquil without even giving it a second thought. It did not occur to me that it even contained alcohol until after I took it. So...no, I didn't take it to get any "feeling" except to help aleve some of the symptoms of my cold and help me sleep. I probably won't take it again though, just because it does contain alcohol.
Nyquil comes in gels too I believe and
that way u can get the relief you need
for ur illness and not the temptation of
alcohol.
Today I dont purchase anything with
alcohol in it and it has become a habit
to check before buying.

I remember hearing some of the hard core folks in AA meetings talk about this all the time. I just can't quite buy that a tiny amount of alcohol will precipitate a relapse..... or maybe my bottom wasn't low enough. IDK.....
I would never tell someone else what to do about things like mouthwash....I know what my own limits are though - I feel it in the gut thinking about certain scenarios. I don't want wine sitting around the house, for example, so I wouldn't buy a bottle for cooking......It's not that I'd drink it necessarily; I just don't want to look at it or smell it......... Other things (cosmetic or medicinal products) I can't imagine drinking...... a whole bottle of Nyquil?- uck! - but I will say I knew a guy who used it on a regular basis when he was still drinking (he was a counselor of mine).
You're doing fine.... I wouldn't worry, Lively. Hope you feel better really soon!

Worth noting, there seem to be a few people here laboring under the impression that Nyquil 'classic' is a pretty small amount of alcohol.
The recommended adult dosage is 2 tablespoons.
A standard shot is 2.5 tablespoons.
Nyquil with alcohol-they sell an alcohol free version-is 25% alcohol by volume.
25% alcohol by volume converts to 43.75 proof.
Admittedly not the same proof as 'hard' liquor, but a pretty hefty dose of alcohol.
You would have to drink a lot of na beer to reach the equivalent of one standard dose of Nyquil.
I think I definitely would want to stick to the non-alcoholic version
