I've read that some 95% of people who suffered trauma in childhood like sexual abuse become addicts. That's my story. There were no alcoholics anywhere in my genetic tree. Can't change the past, can only deal with the present.

I wish him luck but I don't know anyone personally who greatly benefited from understanding "why" they drank in any simple and revelatory way. Much better to get your head round why you can't drink,can't continue as you are and why sobriety is important.
