New again!

I've been tortured whether I could admit the following on this website:

I am now on 3 days sober (which is huge for me). But, I just want to admit that I had my doctor prescribe naltrexone in case my cravings get too bad. In college, Chantix helped me to quit smoking. I thought, why not use "pharmalogical extinction", as they call it, again to quit drinking??? So, to be clear, I'm thrilled to be on day 3 sober and I feel very solid because I have my safety net of naltrexone. But, I understand some of you might think (fairly) I'm cheating a bit. I really hope not. Prior to getting naltrexone, I very much appreciated your support and understanding. I apologize if I've offended anyone for getting this helper.

I hope all is well with everyone. I feel good about where I am.

Sohard,
If someone here is offended, surely it would be THEIR issue.
Do what you need to do.
As you know, it's not a longterm solution, so the suggestion is to use this time to build a foundation for ongoing sobriety.

Use this safe time to develop a strong program to keep you sober in the long run. If naltrexone helps you, that's a good thing. As long as you're sober, you're doing well.

100% correct fini, I too agree that the long term plan is paramount to being successful with sobriety.

The AV will try to trick you in any way possible to feed it. If you've found a solid medication to tell it to go to hell, by all means keep going!

The fact that you keep coming back to SR, proves that you really want to stop, Sohard. And if something - anything - can help keep you off alcohol, I say - go for it. Naltrexone, Antabuse, ice-cream, Cola, cake, sweets... AA, RR... Who cares, as long as it helps.

Well, you’re trying to get sober the best way you can. We try different things sometimes, I used Antabuse for about a year while still drinking occasionally...

If naltrexone helps get rid of your craving for alcohol and you find you don’t want it anymore than it was worth it. If it gives you a way to moderate alcohol, from my experience that will work for a period of time until it does not work any more.

Anything, like Corrie said above, is worth trying. Sometimes we just are where we are, and we can’t quite bite the entire bullet, but we still want to work on it. Goodness knows I spent years and years with that mindset.

Stay safe and best wishes.

If it helps then do it. Just make sure you're working towards long term sobriety at the same time so you can cope without it.

Congratulations on your decision to quit.
Any thought of future drinking is AV and should be recognized and dismissed. Any plan to abstain in the absence of AV without the concurrent plan to abstain in the presence of AV is a plan for more drinks.
Cravings, urges, wantings are just thoughts (AV) and do not mean you need to act on them, the AV 'says' you do, but You call the shots and You decided to no longer act on them, rootin for ya, and again congratulations on your decision!

Agreed!!! Your thoughts about alcohol are a totally different ballgame than the act of drinking alcohol.

Your romantic thoughts of wine will NEVER HOLD UP with the reality. You will always regret actually drinking. Your thoughts are lies.
