Cravings

I've been sober for almost two weeks now and I'm still having some pretty bad cravings for a drink. I was just curious how long it takes most people to overcome their cravings for alcohol? I realize that an alcoholic should never drink again, whether they have cravings or not, but I still think about how nice it would be to have a drink and have a hard time eliminating that thought out of my head. Does this ever go away?

It took me more than two weeks for thoughts of drinking to leave. But eventually, they did.

It certainly does take time. The thing that I noticed was that they went away so gradually that I didn't really realize I wasn't having them anymore. Also, as you get better at dealing with cravings, they are easier to overcome.

Something that I found really helpful was to know that it is actually OK to have cravings. An alcoholic craving alcohol? Who would have thought. It is not OK to act on those cravings, but my point is don't beat yourself up because a craving hits and you want to drink. It is pretty normal for an alcoholic to want to drink...

I drank for 20 years. I had pretty severe cravings for the first 30 days but thwy got slowly but progressively better after that.

The key for me was rebuilding my life. My old life was geared towards drinking., Everything was a trigger.

My new life needed to be one I could be sober and happy in.
It's been years since I've had a craving - honestly

There are some great tips here for those struggling

Appreciate the advice and support from everyone. I hope I can get to the point to where alcohol is something I no longer even have to think about. Right now it's always in the back of my mind. This is further proof to me that an alcoholic can never be a social drinker. It is something that must be eradicated out of my life.
