Librium

What are your thoughts? It was prescribed for my son, though he hasn't taken it yet. Does it really help?

Does it really help with what? Why was it prescribed for him?

They prescribed it for alcohol withdrawals.

I have no experience with that medicine, but if taken as directed, it should help with the effects of the withdrawals. Just don't drink on it.

Welcome to SR!

I've used it several times, though it only seemed to work the first time I tried it. It worked great then. Any subsequent attempts to use it for withdrawals didn't go so well, though. It was like I became immune to it.

If the Dr. thought he should have it, that is the answer. It helped me once.

Doctors prescribe it to help with alcohol withdrawal symptoms and to help prevent seizures. I took it a couple times and it was helpful for me, especially it helped calm the shakes and helped me sleep.

If we stop drinking abruptly, we shock the body. I believe the librium helps the body not to be shocked. All should go well, IF he does NOT drink on it.

I believe it is addictive. Suggest checking side effects on internet. Just google "Librium"

I have taken it for alcohol withdrawals and was very thankful I had it. It is prescribed to help prevent the more serious withdrawal symptoms such as seizures. It is doubtful that the doctor would have prescribed enough to become addicted, only the minimum to get through the worst of the withdrawals for your son.

Why doubt what the doctor prescribed? Take as directed. Medications serve a very specific purpose.

He only prescribed 7 days for him and it was prescribed for the withdrawals. He hasn't taken it yet, but I was just curious to see if it was beneficial in helping others. I do appreciate everyone's feedback.

My partner is doing the same thing for 7 days. He is on day 3. They have been amazing because he is able to jump into AA meetings which he wwould not be able to do if he were having symptoms. He is sleeping properly at night which helps his mental state greatly. It's been an absolute gift!

It worked great for me. I had horrible anxiety, sleeplessness, and night terrors with my prior withdrawals/attempts at quitting which always led me back to drinking. I'm grateful for the Librium. I'm 5 months sober now. Your son does need to be mindful though about not becoming addicted to it (which he shouldn't if taken as prescribed). I was worried about that, but I came off it easily (and my doc gave me a month's supply). I'm not sure where I would be today without it. Wish you and your son the best!
