Actually AA is two parts, The Fellowship and a Spiritual Awakening

The Fellowship is made up of mend and women who share their expereince strength and hope to help newcomers. If they relate and want they can partake in a recovery plan that consists of 12 easy steps outlined in the big book as a suggested program. This program is designed to provide a spiritual awakening where that newcomer can return to the fellowship and help another newcomer.

This is my understanding of the program and God is mentioned in the big book, as your higher power but also of your understanding.

Religion can be just as addicting as heroin and crack - I would be careful.

BE WELL
Personally, I think you've been right all these years. The seminal 1939 book "Alcoholics Anonymous" is about recovering from alcoholism. It's about using the concept of God to do it, as each of us understands that concept. I understand it to mean getting outside of myself and loving everyone else. That, in turn, has allowed me to love myself. I no longer need to drink to hide myself, from me.
