safest way to quit - taper?
I typically drink anywhere from 5-6 drinks per night. Wait. Let's change that. I typically DRANK 5-6 drinks per night. I am quitting and want to know what the safest route is. Should I taper off by having one or two beers? One beer a day for one week? Two beers each day? I've heard that cold turkey can be very dangerous.
And I'd prefer to do this on my own without the assist of a rehab or AA...
Thanks everyone

my doctor did tell me to taper, actually (six months ago when I first tried to quit). guess I should go by that opinion then lol
We can't give you taper guidelines here as that constitutes medical advice.
if it was 6 months ago, I'd see the Doc again. Alcoholism is progressive. He may have other suggestions or ideas based on your condition now.

It's not about the quantity; it's about the impact on your life. Late stage consumption can actually decline quite a bit.
Detoxing has low probability, high cost risks, so best to see a doctor for guidance.

This is from experience. We as alcoholics LOVE to hear the word "taper".....cuz it means we still get to drink. What im saying is that if we had the ability to taper off....then we really woudnt be alcoholics in my opinion. My advice to anyone who received ridiculous medical advice from a doctor such as "taper"....would be go to the hospital. You can die from alcohol withdrawal without medical help.
