Reminding myself

...that alcohol = anxiety, depression, helplessness, hopelessness, fear, grief, unemployment, poverty, no self-esteem, disgust, failure to thrive, failure to plan, failure to grow, failure to parent, inability to plan, hypocrisy, embarrassment, self-pity, self-loathing...I don't ever want to forget this, I need to remind myself daily.

I'll add shame, guilt and remorse.

Wow, what a fun cocktail that was.

I agree with you all. I remind myself of these things daily and it's kept me sober for three years.
The memories, oh the horrible memories.

I agree! So many stories and bad memories of depression. Maiden your list, with some things added, keeps me sober.

One of the long sobriety guys at my regular meeting stated how important it was for him to stay exposed to people new to sobriety so he never forgets where he came from. I tend to agree.

uh huh the perspective to look around the table at AA and see where you've come from and where your going and see those who seem worse off and those who seem better off to see those with big problems and small problems etc.. all working diligently towards the same common goal is priceless.

day 1 you see a guy with 20 years sobreity your in utter awe. day 700 you see a guy with 1 day sobriety your in utter awe.
