Sobriety in the Biggest Little City -Reno-

I can't blame living in Reno for my alcoholism, though I did start drinking excessively last year when I moved here. I have only lived in states that have major drinking regulations and taxes. I was amazed at how easy it is to get alcohol here. Especially if you are gambling. Casinos are a horrendous environment for me and in my mind going to one equals waking up feeling garbage and having no idea what happened. Needless to say, I will live my life never setting foot in one again.

Thursday night a friend was in town and after a long day (and night) of drinking, he passed out in a room and while blacked out I drove home and less than a mile away I slammed into a center divide and totaled by car. My very first DUI and the pleasure of a cold cement room by myself for eight hours with no shoes. After calming down and having a clearer mind, I am glad this happened. Thankfully, myself and no one else was hurt (no other car was involved) but this was exactly what I needed to just plain STOP drinking. I would have been drinking yesterday and today otherwise. I have stopped many times. I had thought when I woke up alone from a black out sure I had had sex with someone but no idea because I did not remember a single thing, that was rock bottom.

I have a bounty of wonderful things in my life to lose and I am starting an intensive outpatient treatment program Monday. I have plenty of court dates and responsibilities attached to my DUI as well.

If anyone is an alcoholic here, please let me know how it is working for you living in Reno. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I'm not in Reno but am an Alcoholic. The location should not be a factor I think. I would be an Alcoholic even on Mars ;-)

Welcome Eli. I don't live in Reno, but I've spent a lot of time in both Reno and Las Vegas. Yes, alcohol is a little more accessible in these cities, but many of us managed to become alcoholics in cities where alcohol isn't as accessible.

It sounds like you have the right attitude; stick around this site, you will find a lot of help and support.

Hi Eli -welcome

I don't live in Reno but I do live in a resort town.

I think recovery's an inside job really - once you decide which side of the recovery fence you're on, the outside location lessens in importance and influence

Hi Eli! Welcome! I don't live in Reno but definitely have my struggles with alcohol!
I received my first dui three months ago and it's crazy how much it's helped me to see things clearly. The court dates and fines are pretty obnoxious but NOTHING compared to what I could have lost. I too looked at (and continue to view) my dui as the worst things could get WITHOUT hurting myself or someone else.

Good luck and continue to come back for support!
