Flying sober
About to take my first flight since getting clean.
Amusing, and shocking to see all the alcoholics downing drinks in the departure lounge bar before getting on the plane. I used to be like that.

I used to think I could NEVER fly again or appreciate traveling because I was sober.
I had a ritual, man. I knew the bartenders at the three major airports around DC as well as I knew the ones down the street at the local watering hole. They always knew what I was drinking, how much, how quickly, etc.
Now? I have traveled and/or taken flights about a dozen times since getting sober and I don't even notice it anymore. I DO notice, however, how nice it is not to get off the plane in another timezone with a hangover, smelling like booze, and needing to rush to my hotel to "fix" it.
Glad you made it through, TD. And yes, it's always eye-opening to see yourself before you got sober in others.
Happy and safe travels!!

i used to travel a lot for work. beer in the departure lounge. duty free vodka swigged in the loos before boarding. mix up a drink in a soft drink bottle for the flight.
there are a couple of flights i took that i am amazed i was allowed on to. that and the fact that i must have reeked of alcohol at meetings the next day. ugh.
i haven't travelled sober yet. it'll be interesting to see from the other side - i can't have been the only one drinking like that.

I never noticed how much drinking had infiltrated every aspect of my life til I had to fly sober. It seemed so odd to not drink at the departure lounge, say a prayer we would get to altitude on time so I could order a drink.
