I looked it up and one article said it can detect heavy alcohol consumption within two weeks.

I understand now.

Can you postpone it and try your hardest for the next few weeks?
Have you managed to stop drinking?

I can imagine you are very nervous about it. I would be too.

So you are going to be fine then!!

I will look and see if I can find anything about the test and how far back it goes for you too.

You have done amazing.
You made a bad choice that's all and is seems to been a massive wake up call for you.

My best

I had a search on some medical sites.

The furthest back is 6 weeks.
Most sites said two weeks.

It looks for consumption of more than 5 units for women and more than 7 units for men on a regular basis.

The test is designed to show someone's pattern of drinking and looks at heavy drinking only.

If it were me, I would make sure I used no cosmetics etc with alcohol in them - such as mouth wash or certain deodrants, before the test.

I think there is also some advice about fasting (stopping eating for 12 hours) before the test.

It takes 5 days for the results to come back.
Not a nice wait.
But you can always come and post away here to keep your mind occupied.

My best

Hey Sasha

Thanks for looking into this for me.

I am worried that even though I have abstained for the last 5 months that they will realise that i have been heavily abusing alcohol in the last 12 months which i have been

Kelz - I might be wrong but I don't think they can see back that far with a blood test.
I am sure one site said the test looked at the condition of red blood cells but the red blood cells return to normal not long after you stop drinking.

I understand your worried.
I would be too.
Is there a helpline you can ring to talk to someone and tell them your concerns, perhaps with the literature you got about the test?

Apparently it is used by doctors to predict diabetes and organ damage from alcohol, so there must be someone somewhere who can advise you.

I am sure that for longer results they to analyse hair and nails.
