Rationalizing Our Drinking

How did you rationalize your drunkenness? Some of my rationalizations and some I heard other alkies use are.
I can't be an alcoholic because I drink beer not hard liquor.
I have a job so my drinking can't be a problem.
It's not a hangover I have the flu:rotfxko. I used that one a lot. Must have about 200 bouts with "the flu" a year!
I work hard so I deserve to get drunk!

Just a few and some of them are funny IMO. Anybody have some more?

Just this last night.
I can't put up with him one more minute.
It'll make me a better performer.
I don't want to be rude... others are drinking.

I'm fine, it's normal to like a drink, everyone does it...not like me though.

I love beer and I love being drunk.

That's the only excuse I needed.

The addiction blinded me to how obscene / unhealthy my drinking had become and how I was risking everything for the bottle.

I've always preferred to call it "irrationalization." There was nothing rationale in my drinking when I knew without a doubt that it was the root of all my problems (physically, mentally, emotionally, financially, socially, etc.). There is nothing rationale in continuing a behavior that I knew would lead to death.

There have been a lot, but the two most recent ones that have popped up are

I don't have any responsibilities right now so why not?

It's been a long time, the damage I did has healed and so It's okay to start up again.

Drinking and using drugs never caused problems, it was the lack of sleep due to going to bed drunk and stoned all the time. If I take extra naps and take a few days off in between I'll be just fine.

Mine were 1) I work hard I deserve to go out and have fun (fun meant getting so drunk I didn't know what I was doing).
2)all my friends drink, if I don't drink I wouldn't see them.
3) I don't drink everyday so I don't have a problem.
I'm sure there are more but those were the main ones I told myself

Ain't that the truth... It's so easy to ignore the damage. That's what is so scary.

I am with you, Xune, on this one. I loved to drink and everything that surrounded it. No rationalization needed I hung out with other drunks--didn't everybody drink like us? Who Knew??

Yea me to. The reality is "I work hard so I guess I deserve to show up at work sick and hungover". Pretty twisted ain't it?
