Odd driving maneuver.
Today I was driving home from my friends house. It has a long stretch of two lane road and on the right side of the road is a liquor store. I was struck by an urge to maybe just have a drink tonight although I knew that was a terrible idea. Now regardless that I had already made up the decision not to drink tonight I find myself hit my right turn signal and drive from the left lane into the right lane just so that if I changed my mind at the last minute I could easily. Thank God I didn't reach for my turn signal twice and headed straight home. This mentality is insane. Just thought Id share. Have a good sober day people.
I'm so lucky. Right when I quit drinking, my usual liquor store actually moved! It was a right turn on the way home, and now it's down the block! I've never been there, and I don't believe I ever will. That quick maneuver has cost me dearly in the past. Call it an impulse buy!
This mentality is insane.
FOR YEARS.
Now in recovery, you are 'retraining' your thought processes and your physical actions.
I have to tell you that even with over 31+ years of continuous recovery, during a
stressful time, my brain will revert to 'the THOUGHT of a drink.' However, it is just
a 'thought' that flitted through my brain ................ I DO NOT HAVE TO ACT ON
THIS THOUGHT.
This is what you did. You DID NOT act on the thought. EXCELLENT. You are into
the 'retraining' of your brain. GOOD JOB!!!
Once we become AWARE that these THOUGHTS can happen and that we DO NOT
have to act on them, then the next time the thought occurs it becomes easier to
not react to the thought.
This will be true for you also. You just proved to yourself that you DO NOT have
to ACT on that thought of 'having a drink.' And we all know that 'having a (1)
drink is just not possible for us. lol
So, keep doing what you are doing. Keep working you, keep moving forward.
Thank you for posting this event as it shows all of us that not reacting to the
thought of drinking or a drug need NOT be acted on.
Love and hugs,
Forward we go...side by side-Rest In Peace

I was in D.C. when my drinking ended and my recovery began.
Driving and drinking are not part of my history.
However.....when getting off work at 10:30 p.m. ..walking the
6 blocks to my apartment made me antsy.
3 liquor stores..7 of my favorite drinking places were
on the way...
My solution? I took a cab home ..
After 2 months in AA I no longer had a drinking obcession
Glad you remained sober ...well done...
