PBS - Prohibition
A history of America's prohibition era (1920-33), when alcohol was outlawed after the passage of the 18th Amendment in 1919. It was the culmination of a movement that began in the mid-19th century, but instead of truly banning booze it merely pushed it underground, giving birth to criminal organizations that traded in the commodity; and turned ordinary men and women into outlaws.
Ep3 A Nation of Hypocrites 10/4/11
Ep2 A Nation of Scofflaws 10/3/11
Ep1 A Nation of Drunkards 10/2/11
Watching it now, just letting you all know. :-)

YW. It's pretty good... I heard that that hatchet swinging woman had run a halfway house in a small town just south of where I live.
Prohibition of alcohol will always backfire, I'm grateful my 'Fever' for it has finally broke.

Both Dr Bob and Bill W became full blown alcoholics during prohibition, as did many of the early members of AA.
Also, don't forget that it was prohibition that assisted the 'career' of early 'mafia' heads to gain their power. Certainly many on here have heard of 'Al Capone'. It is also something the Kennedy family does not talk about, however, Papa Joe Kennedy made a lot of his money 'running rum' during prohibition, as did other well known families that later became 'respectable.
And, of course, we see how well 'prohibition' is working on certain 'drugs'.
It is interesting history, and if we forget our history we will be bound to repeat it. I am watching it and have it recording in case I miss a segment.

Peter Coyote is narrating. He has narrated other documentaries and he always sounds like Henry Fonda.
Thank you for posting this!!!!!!
Love and hugs,

I can always recognize the voice of Peter Coyote, even from another room. One day my daughter was watching a movie in the living room and I was in my bedroom. I hollered in there...Is that Peter Coyote? She hollered back...yes. I hollered back...I KNEW it!!
Anyway, I'm recording the series on Prohibition, too.

I was reading about how during prohibition, it was still legal to have wine in churches, as a sacrament. So all these churches magically popped up, mainly for the sole purpose of dispensing this sacrament. Ironic.
Sounds like an interesting series...I have always been an opponent of prohibitions of almost every sort, but odd such a mania could have swept the land.
