A Lesson in Consideration
Today I had a commercial sales call that I was really looking forward to. I got all dressed up, I scrounged up money for gas to drive downtown and pushed my poor mazda to the breaking point. I actually had to take the highway and because of the problems I could only go at 80 instead of 100 so the whole time people were flying past me.
Anyway I got there (on time no less which for me almost never happens) and the guy opens the door and lo and behold. Someone opens the door (it was a b and b) and the person who answered said that the person I needed to speak to had left like an hour and a half ago.
I think that the guy who answered the door might have been the guy that I was supposed to talk to but at the time I was so stunned that I just didn't think to call him on it.
I had hustled up $20 for gas to get there and spent $10 of it just getting there and then another $4 to get home. I am disappointed but its not like when the head office sets the appointments there aren't people who simply refuse to answer the door. But this was an appointment that I had set and that I had gone to great lengths to make sure happened.
But I guess karma is a beeyatch. I have done this to people so many times. Just set appointments and not show up and the whole time it never occurred to me that someone might actually be depending on the revenue that would have been generated by my visit. It never occurred to me that someone might be spending their last dollar to come and see me or sacrificing something to try and get their business off the ground.
Anyway, I'm going to keep trying. Tomorrow I plan to just sit and cold call from home until I find someone who is actually in the market for what I'm selling. I just cant afford to spend money on appointments where people don't even know what I am talking about. I've also been trying to get money by doing odd jobs while I wait for my paycheque.

Great post. I like how quickly you put yourself in the shoes of others, and instead of feeling sorry for yourself, empathized with them. I'm sorry it happened, but think it's pretty cool how you handled it.
