Went to Celebrate Recovery

Hi everyone,
Last night I went to a CR introduction, It was at my church lots of people there!! I found every one very nice and the program itself seems like something I would be interested in....what I didn't expect was that it just wasn't focused on alcohol or drug addiction, there was many different addictions that were there...for the first while you would be in a group of women with all different kinds of addiction, then if there are enough of one particular ones, you go into a group.. I'm not sure if being with other women who are say co-dependent would really be of help for me....I plan on going back next Monday to get more of a feel for it....I guess maybe I was thinking it was going to be more on alcohol/drug addiction....

Anyone ever gone to CR? what is your take on it??

Thanks!

I've been to CR. It is great if you are a Christian, because by definition your higher power in the group is Christ. If you post in the Christians in Recovery forum you'll likely get a lot more feedback.

I went during my last stretch and it was a great place for me to be. Part of my toolbox, so to speak. I stayed away during my last relapse, but making it a point to go tonight.

I actually like the variety in CR. Ours lasts 2 1/2 hrs, but we only split once into a mens and women's group.

I honestly did not find it helpful, specifically because they lump together not only all addictions, but everything that they call "hurts, habits, and hangups", including things like pornography and history of abuse. I think they try to cram too much into one sack. Your experience may be different.

There's another thread on this but I'll repeat part of what I said.

I really like the concept...... like the heavy spirituality because, IMO, that's why I'm sober (not because I did something, stopped something, or really had anything to do with it).

Unfortunately, at the meeting I went to, everyone talked about their "problems" .......and while that's all well and good I guess, they were ppl who'd been dealing with the same stuff (they said) since they got there.....many of them for years or more. There was one guy with some longer-term sobriety but he seemed to be more interested in quoting bible verses and impressing ppl.

Granted, there are PLENTY of egos in AA.....but at least I can find a meeting with plenty of ppl who've APPLIED the spiritual principles and have recovered. It's not tough to find an AA mtg with a dozen ppl with 10+ years. Those are the folks I want to hang around. No offense, but even when I was brand spankin new, I didn't want to know what the ppl who had a small amount of time were doing to stay sober - they were as crazy as I was. I wanted to know what the ppl who made it work for many years did....so I could do that stuff.

The ONE meeting I went to was great for fellowshipping but lacking on the recovery. I'll try another couple and see how it goes though.

I think having some of everything to see what works best is the most important thing in recovery. If doing the hokey-pokey in the middle of a busy interstate would help, I'd be out there doing it.

I was invited to speak at a CR in North Carolina a year and a half after I'd been sober and, while they were considering only Eight Steps, they had quite an attendance for a Friday evening. Seems it was working for those who worked it. We have it here, as well, but the court system has mandated it as court deferral (yep, it's spelled correctly) so, alas, it has lost the aspect of 'choice' in recovery, IMO.

If you're interested in this, and integration of The Twelve Steps, Serenity Prayer Path, and The Principles, check out The Life Recovery Bible NLT by David Stoop and Stephen Arterburn. It's an N.L.T. bible with recovery paths in each of the three areas I listed. I have used it with sponsees as a supplement to AA literature in recovery and own one myself. Just another tool...

Doing the hokey-pokey WILL help one stop drinking. The trick is to do it while still living...
