Lost the first person I knew (personally) to alcoholism today
It was the dad of one of my close friends I grew up with. His dad was an alcoholic and died after complications from a recent liver transplant.
My friend's dad was a great guy. He reeked of booze from the first time I met him as a 6 year old kid and my parents were always reluctant for me to go over and spend the night at their place. He was the janitor at our high school and a hard, hard worker. He never judged the students and was always around to help whoever needed a hand.
He was stigmatized in our small town as the well-meaning, hard working, drunk( but never drank on the job) janitor. He was one of the good guys. Never hit his wife. Never missed a day of work. Always there to drive his boys to hockey and baseball practices. Renting us kids nintendo games when we didn't have a nickel. He was one of these angels in the world who always put everyone else before himself and had a bad alcohol addiction. He leaves behind his two sons in their late 20's, x3 beautiful grandkids, and his ever adoring & patient wife. This one hits home.
I pray he's off to a good place. He was 55. Rest in Peace, Elmer

Alcoholic tend to be very emotional people. I think that's part of the reason we drink/drank so much, all these emotions we don't know how to deal with. I'm sorry for your loss, from your description of this man he did week to be a great guy. It sad to lose such good people.
What a nice way to be remembered. I am sorry for your loss..It is truly a horrible addiction. I also think that when we go thru these losses it makes us stronger in our resolve to stay sober.
God rest his soul.
I'm quite moved, Elmer. I have never lost a person to alcoholism but I've lost three very good friends to heroin addiction. It's never he case that I ever stopped loving those people even at the worst of their problem and the moment of their death. To me they were victims of a disease, not entirely responsible for their chemical problems. They were saints with an addictive disease, some of the most loving people I've ever met, but drugs are indifferent to character. They take the good and the bad.

Sorry for your loss Mercurial, and sending lots positive thoughts for his family.
Alcohol ins an undiscriminating killer. May Elmer rest in peace and be remembered for the good things he did.
Hug,

I am sorry for the loss of your friend. It is very sad.
I am glad that he knew love and has so many that care for him.
This is a very touching tribute, and thank you for sharing. I am glad that alcohol did not take everything good from him, tho losing his life at such a young age is very tragic.
I pray for peace for his family.

I've been having more sober days than days under the influence as of late. Going to AA & seeing a psychologist that specializes in addictions. It's going somewhat better. Thanks for asking & hope you're having a great weekend
