What "easier, softer" ways have you tried?
But I was a pretty in shape drunk, I would drink all day, then start working out at home on the treadmill and lifting and doing aerobics 3 times a week at about 4:45PM because my wife would come home at 5:15PM. She would see me sweating and working out and wouldn't bug me, and then I would go for a swim and then shower and take a nap. I would wake up for a light dinner around 7PM, she would go up to our room at 8PM, and I would open the bar at 8:05PM, and start all over again. I can't believe the lengths that I went to, to get away with drinking....but I was in shape!!Hahaha
Easier softer ways for me were:
- thinking I could put the plug in the jug
- not drinking and going to meetings
- thinking I could change people places and things
- hiding behind the "attraction not promotion" tradition
- thinking anonymity meant secrecy
- sticking with the winners when I should be sticking with the losers
- believing that all I needed to do was think the drink through
- working a "selfish" program

This my first attempt to actually quit altogether, but I have tried to moderate the same as others. Switch to beer, drink on weekends only, measure exactly 1 shot for mixed drinks, limit myself to 2 cans of ginger ale, but make drinks with as much vodka as I wanted, drinking only in social situations, etc. I also have felt that its easier to have none that it is to have none. I'm only 11 days sober, and in time I'm sure there will be tough situations to face, but as of now, I feel great!
