First Post: 11 days off alcohol and withdrawals are ruthless
I have been off alcohol for 11 days after a year and a half of at least 8 beers a night, and im dealing with unpleasant withdrawals to say the least. The first 2 days i felt great being off alcohol but then i noticed increased trembling, insomnia, lightheaded spells almost to the point of syncope, anxiety attacks, and the most annoying of all lethargy and inability to workout without becoming extremely lightheaded and winded. I am taking .75mg-1mg of xanax at night to help sleep, drinking an electrolyte cocktail of supplements, and about to start taking thiamine rich multi-vitamins. Im suspicious of hypoglycemia but wary of taking glucose tablets in case it is hyperglycemia (waiting for blood test results)
last blood tests done the day i stopped drinking:
only abnormalities:
slightly low sodium
slightly high calcium
How long do withdrawals usually last? is their anything else i should be taking? Im also on beta blockers for HBP will this increase my risk for psychological problems i.e. increased mental changes and vision issues?

You have questions that only a medical professional
should answer. SR members are not allowed to give
medical advice....we are not qualified.
Please do check with your doctor for directions as to
what you need to be doing for health....
You could also read the top sticky post here for our
experiences with de toxing. there is information there too.

Your experience and mine are totally different.
I drank longer and harder than you.
I did not use a drug nor was I taking a beta blocker.
I was not under a doctors care for withdrawals.
The only supplements I did were a multi vitamin +B complex daily
I did follow an eating plan recommended by my doctor.
Yes it was for hypoglycemia
I was finished my de tox by day 4.
Are you aware of PAWS? Is your doctor?

You should be over major withdrawals by now. If I were you I would watch the xanax. I had major difficulties with sleep after quitting Xanax after taking it only for a week detoxing once. I diet of lean protein and complex carbohydrates with lots of water and daily exercise should help greatly. I would avoid any sugars as these can throw your system for a loop also. Really, at this point the only major thing you could do wrong is to drink. Exercise for me is probably the number one thing that keeps me sane and sober.

I am almost 3 months into recovery and still experiencing many of the same symptoms as you are currently feeling. Interesting in regards to the elevated calcium levels as my bloodwork routinely showed elevated calcium levels during my active drinking years. In addition, although I feel the compulsion to exercise, I feel completely "whacked out" and overstimulated following the experience. I am currently attributing all of my issues to PAWS. Unfortunately, it might get worse before it gets better......but, it is reassuring to know, it does get better.
