Urges?

Granted, am only at Day 2, but both yesterday and today when I am hungry middle of the day, I have this physical sense of withdrawal (in my arms, its odd, like nicotine withdrawal if anyone can relate to that feeling). It goes away about 15 mins to half hour after eating a meal and stays gone. Does anyone have this experience and/or know if there's a connection with going through alcohol withdrawal and sugar cravings/or drops in sugar levels that causes this feeling? Its definitely a moment when I considered grabbing my husbands beer and taking a slug (though not a beer drinker, I can avoid that - wine is my poison and mercifully there's none of hand).

hi watson -

welcome to SR!

and welcome to sobriety -
that said:
I cannot stress enough the advice to seek a doctor's supervision when detoxing from alcohol.

You might want to read the stickies at the top of the forum,
especiallly the 'Under the Influence' excerpts.

Going cold tyurkey off alcohol,
you risk life threatening symptoms
and it doesnt necessarily depend on the amount you
previously ingested
it depends on your individual body's capacity to process
what has been injested.

Had I to do it over -
I'd have been under supervision.
I experienced what are,
three years later,
turning out to be permanent damage
and I'd hate to see that happen to anyone else.

I see you've posted before maybe there's more information on your prior posts,
I hope I'm being over cautious because it's better than the opposite in this situation.

See your Doctor is the standard response for these things... * I believe * however that your body gets used to the massive hit of sugar from getting drunk... so you get shaky confused urges when your blood sugar drops. That is why AA tells people to have candy around however by the time I stopped I was pre-diabetic so sugar did nothing but send me into more cravings... Best of luck to you on your journey. It gets so much better...

When you drink your body converts the alcohol into carbohydates/sugar. When you stop, your bady is saying "What's up with this? Where's the sugar?" It's a very common reaction. I used ice cream as my solution, but don't recommend it unless you want to gain a lot of weight. Orange juice works just as well and is a lot healthier. The cravings will pass after a while.

Please click on the line below for information about de toxing
and some of our experiences

http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...at-we-did.html

Yes checking with your doctor is always wise
but you must be honest about your alcohol consumption.
Then your doctor will know what to look for with a blood test.

Good to see you again....

Hi,
unfortunately i don't have an answer to your question. I'm just posting to congratulate you on your 2days.
I know what you must be going through. Keep it up. We are both in our very early recovery stages and need as much support as we can get.

Take care of yourself and well done for taking a step

thanks to all for the sage advice. Will see how I do before I head to the doctors. Health insurance makes me nervous about having this on my record. I did have enzyme/liver function tests about 3 years ago (ok, so that was awhile back) that were normal. Will guage what's what. Start of Day 3, and does the morning clear head feel good (and my mood improved!).

watsonc -- i had the same experience you did when i quit. my advice is to just go with it. i ate like a horse when i quit, but the cravings would dissipate after i ate, which was great. i even lost weight eating like a horse because my body was no longer metabolizing the alcohol (which is akin to high-octane, jet fuel) and instead metabolizing what i was eating.

AA often cites an acronym known as HALT. never get too HUNGRY, angry, lonely, or tired.

best of luck. again, just go with it.
