"...Its pretty useless with out a program of recovery used in conjunction with it..."
"...If you read the studies done on this medication as well as Campral, you'll find that it's most effective when used in conjunction with a 12 step program (AA)..."
"...When used in conjunction with any psychotherapy or formal program its more effective..."

In one of the previous posts there was a link to a CNN.com article in which a federally funded study known as COMBINE was mentioned.....its findings would Seem to argue the statements above.......:
"Project Combine, the largest controlled clinical trial in the alcoholism treatment field, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in May, 2006, has shown "that while naltrexone was effective in its own right, combining it with the specialized counseling added NO MORE EFFECTIVENESS than naltrexone by itself" according to Dr. Raymond Anton, the coordinator for the trial."
The question is often asked as to why this drug, and or other similar drugs, is not suggested more often. Well, a majority of doctors do suggest it to their patients (approximatels 80% of them). I would wager that those in "the addiction treatment 'business'" aren't suggesting it..........well, duh, they'd be out of 'business' if it really did work; they'd have no clients....?........lolol

The NHS (non profit making with budgeting constraints) often recommend any medication should be undertaken with appropriate therapy, counselling etc.
Although overall I understand what you are getting at. Luckily I live in the UK, where we have intensive outpatient treatment centres and drugs that are free for the poor and a minimal fee for those who can afford it.
