shower addiction

no joke
for the last few years I have been addicted to showers.

I take some days 3-4 a day.

most days its 2.

But they are long, and I rarely do any washing.

The objective is to not get clean, its to find comfort.

It coincides that my shower addiction has been happening while I was stopping anxiety medicines, drinking, stopping drinking.

I spend many days where I just feel cold and want the warmth.

Some days I just can't relax and crave the shower.

Some days I need and escape and for 40 minutes the sound of water, the water hitting me, closing my eyes, the warmth, I just disappear.

It helps me sleep and relax.

allows me to think.

I know its not a bad habit to have. But why? What causes this? I wasn't like this years ago. I couldnt be bothered to stop and relax in a shower, I was too wired.

would guess the calmness of it. I'm addicted to anything that calms me.

Just had enough of the gung ho attitude towards life, doing this or doing that for whatever reason that never seems to add up to anything when i was like that in the past.

Got sick of it and got sick of being like that.

Hi Softerlouder,
This ISN'T the weirdest thing I've heard about in these forums.

If it helps you, why worry about it? I take a warm bath every night with epsom salts. I stock up on epsom salts, and I don't let myself run out of them.

Getting sober and staying sober isn't easy... it's nice to have non-chemical things that make us feel good. If it helps you stay away from drugs and alcohol, more power to you!

My youngest Grandson is a mental and physically well guy.
No drugs...tobacco...or alcohol intake.
He often did long hot showers several times a day.

This ceased abruptly when he joined the Army.
....They frown on somebody using up all the hot water.

I too find water soothes me.
Good to see you here with us..

where I live in the tropics, sometimes you gotta take 2, maybe 3 showers a day...all in the perspective I guess

I'm with Chip - sounds like a back to the womb comfort thing...there are way worse ways to try and gain comfort, and no harm done...unless you hate pruney skin...or pay for water

When i first got sober I took many many baths! However where I live now we need to conserve water so it's only one a day! :/ Hey, whatever keeps you sober is cool!

One of the things I found in sobriety that helps calm me is hot baths. I too take at least one a day..with some nice smelly bubble stuff.

If it helps, sounds ok to me! Self care is important!

I smiled when I saw the title of this thread--not because I found it funny, but because I could relate.

I went through a period at about a year sober where my showers increased over time to the point that I was taking five or six a day. I finally learned not to wet my hair each time, as sometimes I would be back in the shower before my hair had dried from the last time. Dry skin and angry housemates (at the lack of hot water) are the only issues I see!

I take very quick showers now, and rarely more than one a day because there are now six of us with a hot water tank that can't support more than our minimum requirements. Besides that, life has gotten so busy that I can't make time for more, though I will make a hot bath part of a Sunday afternoon pampering.

So long as it doesn't interfere with your life and your responsibilities, I see nothing wrong with it. But, do moisturize!

Peace & Love,
Sugah

I would like to do the same but two things stop me...
I run out of hot water (that lets me know shower time is over) and using more then one towel a day... well I can be a penny pincher and the added laundy just won't let me do it *LOL* Laundry also uses up my special blend hot water *LOL*

Does not sound like an addiction, but rather another tool to recover with. Peace is always valuable if garnered without mood-altering substances.

You may want to consider one of those tankless water heaters - endless supply of hot water, they are great!

I don't think it's an addiction. I think you're seeking comfort in the only way you know right now. I certainly think this is a better way than seeking comfort through drugs or alcohol. You go girl!

I have always said if someone told me that kissing a billy goat every morning kept them sober I would say good for them.

Shower away!!!! I have a feeling that it is a form of meditation/relaxation, nothing wrong with that at all.

I do the same thing. Something about feeling the water on my skin and the warmth. It's not unhealthy.

I'll one up you: I do most of my praying in the shower. I like to feel some sort of touch on my skin, it helps me to connect with my HP.

The shower thing could possibly be a obsessive compulsive thing, but I'm not a doctor. I think all of us are obsessive compulsive in one way or another.

When I watch TV or listen to the radio, I have to have the volume on an even number. I can have the volume on the TV at 11 or 21, it always has to be a even number...lol

I wouldn't loose sleep over it.

I used to sit in the shower after I got into it real bad. Sweating it out and vomitting, before class or work. Insanity.

I also used to sleep in the bathtub while it was full of hot water. Only problem is you wake up in the middle of the night shivering cause the water gets cold. Then you gotta warm it back up. Ya come out all sorts of prune like to the xtreme. This is dangerous, your head could slide in and you might drown especially if you were passed out.

Its good to be clean and warm.
