Sean's sobriety

Hello, I'm drinking too much and will be making a major effort from tomorrow to quit. I thought I'd take the opportunity to say here briefly how I'm doing, so plan to do daily posts for the day just gone. I guess coming here is only for me, and maybe I should be joining a live group, but I did go nine months before plus other spells of five or six weeks or so, so I feel I can do this. Thanks for having me.

Hello Sean, glad you're here!

I tried to stay sober by myself many times. It's much easier with plenty of support. I hope you'll consider a program and plan for your recovery.

Hello, Sean02. Hope you will indeed check in each day with your progress. Also hope you have or are reading back posts here. Folks have taken a lot of time to share their wisdom and experiences and they should be most helpful to you.

Best to you from the Snowgoose.

Hi Sean,

I'm one of those that tried to do it by myself but it never lasted. I finally became humble enough to ask for help and it worked and continues to work for me with the Program of AA and others in my life that choose to live a sober life.

Good luck, and keep coming back!!!

Please try to quit before you have the experience I have. I am also Floridagal (at my office). You can read my pitiful story. For five years, I have told myself I didn't have a problem because I could go for 10-2 weeks without a drop. I can tell you now that I've admitted (sincerely and genuinely) to myself, my doctor, and close friends, I feel a strength that I haven't felt in a long time. Don't get me wrong though. I know I'm still weak concerning alcohol. Very weak. But, somehow, now admitting that weakness is making me strong.

Wow, thanks folks! I never had such a welcome on a forum, for sure! Good to read all that- you need all the help you can get with this thing. And I like the quote about alcohol being patient!

(So far so good by the way- I'm off for a jog tonight.)

Sean have you seen your doctor yet? Alcohol withdrawals can and do kill folks.

As you have seen by your own record of relapsing your expereince in staying quit lines right up with the MANY years I spent quitting on my own, I always wound up drinking again. The hard part is not stopping drinking, it is staying stopped!!!

Stopping drinking alone is not hard at all unless you cross that invisible line going from the mental obsession and mild addicition to alcohol into the PHYSICAL addiction, for me that was also the point where I really wanted to stop drinking, but my body was physically addicted to alcohol and as a result I had no choice, I had to drink every day just to feel normal, not drunk, not high, but simply normal, all the pleasure for me was gone from alcohol, alcohol had become a requirement for a normal life for me!

I had to go to detox in order to withdraw from alcohol, but the worst battle after a 5 day detox was the battle to just get home without stopping to get a 12 pack!

Luckily for me in detox they told me that I did not have to stay sober alone, they told me if I wanted a chance to stay sober to go to at least 90 AA meetings in 90 days and get a sponsor.

In AA I found out that I was a total and absolute idiot for trying to stay stopped alone!!!!!

Why do it alone when there are millions of people in programs all over the world helping each other stay sober?

All clear for me on the 1st- drink crossed my mind once or twice but no more; the usual trouble with thoughts about the past, but I know alc doesn't really help.

There is a lot more to recovery than not drinking.
Go to meetings, get a sponser, clean up the wreckage of your past and join us!

Nov 3rd clear. (Definitely doing the right thing here!)

I'm into Indian philosophy and the image of the nataraja is an inspiration to me- Shiva dances in bliss circumscribed by a circle of fire...

The forum won't let me post links yet but there's a great photo on the Wiki nataraja article.
