Hi! It's been a while since I've been here. This place was one of my lifelines when I first got sober.
I have a question, and I know this forum is the place to ask, but I'm not sure which section to post it in, so please bear with me.
I've been clean and sober since 9/27/2003. It hasn't been easy, but I've had a lot of help, both in AA and with some very good friends.
I had one particular AA meeting that I went to every week for a long time. For one reason or another, I haven't been to that meeting, or any meeting for a little less than a year. I'm doing fine, I'm still sober, my life is more focussed than it's been in a long time, I just haven't been going to meetings.
Now my question. With my sobriety date coming up, I'd like to go to "my" meeting and pick up my four year chip. I don't know why, but getting that chip still feels important to me. Would it be OK for me to do so when I haven't been to a meeting in so long? Would it be wrong of me to just go to get my chip and to be with people who understand what sobriety is all about on that one night?

Hi, Pelp: Congrats on putting together quite a few 24hours. Various areas have different practices with regard to celebrating anniversaries. Around here, the appropriate thing would be to get back to that meeting ASAP and arrange to have your celebration with them. The fact that you have not been to that meeting regularly recently would be ignored.
I feel it is important to celebrate sobriety anniversaries as it shows newcomers that the program works. So I'd vote: Go for it!

Our group orders the year Medallions for members as needed.
We order each month for those celebrating.
We don't keep extras.
If this group uses chips...not medallions
perhaps they keep them on hand.
Sorry...I have no idea.
Hazelton carries Medallions if you want to order
your own.

Picking up my chip
The meeting that I'd be going to does keep chips on hand, or at least they did the last time I went.
Even if they didn't have the chip (in stock) I'd still be among people who would understand what it's all about.

Hey Pelp!!! You are right down the road from me!!! What is the name of the meeting? Every meeting I go to keeps chips on hand and I can assure you that you will be welcome back even if it is just to pick up a chip. Shoot me a PM if you would rather do it that way.

Well, lets see, 24 days to your date.
Should be able to go to 2 or three of your meetings before your anniv.
That should give you the opportunity to re-connect.
I would think that they will be glad to accomidate you.

You said it, AA helped you get where you are. Congratulations on your milestone and I think you OWE it to AA and YOURSELF to show those behind you in sober days that it can be done. Go collect the chip, and you may find that while you are there you just might want to give back some of what was given to you by "meeting and greeting" a newcomer.

Thank you, all of you! You've helped me to make up my mind. I'll go to the meeting and proudly pick up my chip. And I think that there will be people there who'll be proud with me, even if I haven't been around for a while.

I always enjoyed and looked forward to AA Anniversaries...my own, or anyone else's. The first ones I attended filled me with awe, and I couldn't believe people could stay sober all that time...that was over 27 years ago...my sobriety date is 11/15/79.
I'm sorry you've been staying away from meetings...I've been unable to go for almost six years...and I miss them. Personally, I think you owe it to yourself to pick up your chip (you earned it), and you owe it to the newcomer to prove, by example, that the program works. For all you know, there may be some newly-sober person in the room who will be inspired by your four years of sobriety. Congratulations!
