Over-Caffeinated
Ok...so my latest is drinking Diet Coke all day. Is it possible to NOT do something to excess? My Diet Coke intake has been gradually on the rise and I'm concerned about my caffeine intake. Lately, I've been getting these eye twitches or spasms and I googled eye spasm only to learn that some opthamologists recommend less caffeine for those that have involuntary eye twitching. Ugh. Has anyone else seen their soda/caffeine intake go up while sober (I'm coming up on two years now)? I would love to hear from those who have cut down or cut out caffeine just to know that it's possible.
It is possible gurujake. While I haven't increased my soda intake or my coffee intake since quitting drinking (about 9 months now)... I have given up my morning coffee. I had a concern about my blood pressure.
I had a headache for the first few days and felt sluggish.. but it passed quickly . It's been almost about 4 months w/o the caffiene (save for a few iced coffees here and there).

Guru,
How long have you been sober?
The reason I ask is that eye twitching is a very common symptom of alcohol withdrawal. If you are newly sober or still hitting the bottle occasionally, this could be the cause of the eye twitching.
By the way how is Aliso Viejo? I spent 14 years in OC (Costa Mesa) and I remember when Aliso Viejo was a blueprint. I was there about 6 months ago and I could not believe it.

I drink at least a pot of coffee a day. Don't know why I'm not twitchen!
I would reccommend getting away from diet stuff tho. The aspertame they use for sweetener is really poison. I will use sugar before I'll touch that stuff!
Congrats on the 2 years !

Hi Gurujake, just happens there was an article on health in yesterdays paper, one of the things it mentions is a twitching eye. Apparantly a lack of magnesium can cause it. Sources of magnesium include brazil, almond and cashew nuts, soya beans and spinach. Of course you can find a more extensive list on the internet.

well, recovery is about a lot of stuff
coffee / caffiene
boy, do i wish bill w. was a lemonade drinker
maybe it would have let go of the cofee thing
although
i go to Aa's second oldest group
live in the nabe of bill w's house
know some old, old timers
surprisingly,
the group met at the st. george hotel
a popular spot in those days
and
they rented one of the banquet rooms
and
in the history of one of the groups
it was know as "the ice water group"
as they had ice water during the meeting
but
to get on the topic
hey, caffiene a problem
drink water
save a bunch a bucks, no less
best

America's Favorite Drug
Don't call it a mind or mood altering drug in an AA meeting though. They'll run you out on pole. (NA, too, from what I hear).
Caffeine has been an on-and-off problem for me ever since I got sober. I have never noticed the twitching, but it does stir up anxiety pretty good (and some insomnia, too -- unless I come home late and dead tired.

Yes my caffeine intake skyrocketed after I got sober, but I have since gotten it under control. Restlessness ,hyperactivity, disturbed sleep patterns, indigestion were just some of the symptoms.
Diet Coke is high in caffeine and used to be one of my favorites too but I have been able to reduce a 2, 20oz bottle a day habit to about one or less per week.

I totally quit drinking all caffeine before giving up the booze. I drink sparkling water with some lemon. It's fizzy and tastes good. I do make sure to buy the stuff without sodium.
If I want to get fancy, I'll add a splash of cranberry juice!

Caffeine definitely impacts me...I've quit for months at a time due to anxiety. I'm back to 12oz. once in the morning. I'd try to stop for a while to see what happens. Careful though, the withdrawals can be painful.
