Relapse vs Slip
1-An accident is an accident. It's happened to me a couple times, like around Christmas when the rum balls are at parties. I tell my sponsor just to keep it honest.
2-An accident is not a slip or relapse....IMO. Other people may say it is, but it's my sobriety and I'll call it what I want to.
3-There are other over the counter medications which don't have alcohol in them. Those are the ones I go for. I wouldn't take Nyquil for the simple reason that I might get to liking it. I've found Alka-Seltzer Plus helps with a cold, coupled with Ibuprophen. That's all I need. For a persistant cough, I make sure there's no alcohol, like Delsym.
To me it comes down to being honest with myself. If I'm using Nyquil with the full knowledge that it's loaded with alcohol and I like the buzz, I'm heading for a fall.

Well put, I concur.

I think along the same lines as taffycita pointed out. However one chooses to define their lapse could have an impact on their recovery. Like believing that having a slip is harmless may cause a return to drinking full time.

Relapse to me implies continuing in an alcholic type direction. I am on day 19 and holding strong. The last time I drank was my buddy's b-day. Ooops, I slipped. Rather than be hard on myself saying I relapsed, I chose to "pick myself back up" and spend the following day up until now sober. I could of said "damn I Relapsed" so I might as well continue drinking.
I personally think relapse and slip are two different things. I challenge you to say to someone who has been sober for years and then "slips" but recognizes it that they "relapsed". It would definetely **** me off. Why must we always put such harsh labels on ourselves compared to other people. I think that is the problem with some peoples mindset.

Drinking plain old beer would probably be a slip. However, drinking the hard stuff would be a relapse.

which you drink..or if you mix them up...
they all do the same damage to your brain and body.
...Soooo...I don't choose to return to drinking.

The term "relapse" is like a dirty word when I hear it around the rooms of AA.

Well, 'wow' isn't the first thought that entered my mind, but I guess it'll do.....or perhaps......'huh?' or 'hmmmmmmmmm' or the ever-popular: LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL......you're a pip, tib (o:

Is a drink a drink?
Yesterday I was helping another person in the program prepare for afamily event. During the course of preparations she asked if I wanted some tea to drink -- I said yes; she commented she needed to refill her tea.
Later that morning, I picked up, what I thought to be my glass, for a drink. I took a sip and realized it was straight alcohol! I inadvertently picked up her glass.
I will have three years next month and have never had a drop of alcohol on my lips. I practically had a panic attack wondering if I had just "slipped" or "relapsed".
I have since spoken with my sponsor, who has 20+ years, and a friend who has been sober for 10+ years and is an addiction recovery therapist.
I have been assured that this inadvertence was not a "slip" or "relapse" and does not interefere with my sobriety date.
"Slip" or "Relapse" is not a step in AA. Regardless, it comes down to honesty. If a person DECIDES to drink, it is their own inventory, honesty and program.

i dont like the word "slip"..
it kind of conjures up images of a quick beer or two.......
and anytime Ive returned to drinking Ive gone at it.....with passion...
slip just seems a weak word for doing something that kills..........regular..
that my take.
