My name is Carla and I am an Alcoholic/Addict

Looking forward to some input while I rework the steps as this is not my first rodeo. I lived a very happy and productive sober life from 2001 to 2006 and saw the miracle of the promises happening in my life everyday and used the very sudden death of my then fiance from brain cancer as an excuse to go on a 6 year black out drunk. Have been gathering 5 to 6 months of sobriety at a time since but have discovered I am a chronic relapser. I am engaged to someone who is also in the program, ironically we met in a bar and made the decision to get sober together. So far it has been a roller coaster ride of him relapsing and me relapsing to get even. Over these last 2 years I see where my mistakes have been and my focus is on me solely and my recovery. I have multiple psychiatric diagnosis and my doctor is fully aware of my alcoholism and drug addiction and I am taking psychiatric drugs *AS PRESCRIBED* This seems to be a problem with 3 sponsors I have had in the past 2 years all suggesting that I am not sober if I am on psychiatric meds. The same regimen of meds. which have kept me from psychiatric hospitals since prescribed. This is a new concept to me (This STIGMA). I previously lived in another state and the stigma in this district has me looking to other choices for help with my continued recovery~ churches/ Celebrate Recovery etc. Anyway, as usual I am rambling. I'm sure I will take some brow beating over this introduction. But I am who I am.

Welcome to SR!

I thought a sponsor was there to support you in your addiction. A doctor prescription for mental health medication seems out of the addiction scope to me. My 50 Cents

Glad you found us

I would suggest asking these 'sponsors' to show you precisely where in the BB this link between lack of sobriety and psych meds is made. The pamphlet 'AA Member-Medications and Other Drugs' is very useful as well.

Hi and Welcome,

I'm glad you found us. I would never allow someone to tell me that psychiatric medications my doctor prescribed were not okay. That should be between you and your doctor.

Hi Carla!!!

Welcome to SR. I haven't done AA, but I would have to disagree with that sponsor if you have legit prescribed medication for your mental health. Keep coming back, the people here are so supportive & loving!

Hi Carla and I'll echo others posts with my own. I'm going to start AA meetings soon and I'm on Rx antidepressants and am not going to get off of them until my therapist and doctor agree. I was very depressed in November and the meds actually gave me the "space" to see that I am strong enough to become a non-drinker. Mental illness is not something to mess around with.

Hope to see you around.

Welcome to the family. Saying you're not 'sober' due to taking psych meds is just wrong! It 's not their business what your doctor gives you.

You'll find lots of support here.

I would say those sponsors 'advice' is downright dangerous saying youre not sober if taking medication is a load of crap sorry. Im a mental health nurse and on medication myself. If i came off i could become very unwell as could most people on medication so they really need some education before giving such awful advice!! ugh sorry that just winds me up.
Please dont listen to them with regards to that subject and speak to your doctor if you want advice hun.
Anyway lovely to meet you and well done xx
