is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in
everlasting ignorance, that principle is contempt prior to
investigation.'"

That was me. I believed the program could and would work for other people, but really didn't think it would work for me. I would attend meetings, using it mainly for a social club to "fix me." I still felt like an outsider for a long time. I saw other people working steps, getting sober, and remaining sober. I wasn't working a program, and I didn't stay sober. I felt like the newcomer in the revolving door. I felt like I would always be a permanent newcomer. I am glad that I decided to give it a try. It works.
Possibly my favorite line in the book (sorry Bill W.). I can go on at length about how I fit that then, and how I am able to still do it now, if I closed to the sunlight of the Spirit. Open-mindedness and open heart are two things I pray for every morning and evening, and the more of those I have, the less contempt prior to investigation I have. As soon as I start to become unteachable, then all bets are off. This idea cuts across all layers of my life and the more I am free of it, the freer I become.
