Was sober for 22 years and relapsed 3 years ago. Have had fairly long bouts of not drinking the last 3 years, twice for 6 months, once for 4 months and many other times a month or two here and there. Trying to get back to the mind-set I was at for that 22 years.

Welcome Another! This is a very supportive place to be. Twenty Two years sober, wow. I went 7 before thinking I was older and wiser and could most certainly hold my alcohol. I began drinking again almost 4 years ago with the only sober time being for 6 weeks. I am not really sure why I ever started again, life was great.
Good Luck and keep posting:ghug3

Yeah, I got the grand idea that I would experiment to see if I really was a drunk or not and thought, "Hey if I am still an alkie, I'll just quit again". I thought it would be easy again as it was the first time but it's not.
To those that relapsed........were you going to AA when you relapsed?
No judgments about your answer, just a question.:wtf2
Also, another question...... Are most of the people on here big time AAes? Just curious.

I'm not sure what the numbers are, but there are many members here who attend AA. There are also many who do not.
I do attend AA, and have for over 6 years. I had two years sober, relapsed, started over, got another two years, relapsed, started over, and now I have about 20 months clean and sober. The quality of my sobriety is better than ever, and I credit that to working the 12 Steps, attending meetings, working with others, and staying in today as best I can.
I'm glad that you found us and hope that you continue to read and post.

Thanks to you all that responded for the welcome. I know from experience that many oldies don't bother with newbies and I understand that.
I think I'll be around for a while........ I need like-minded people that are stuggling.
Glad to find this forum.

Hi AnotherDrunk, welcome to SR. You'll find lots of support here. Those 22 years count for something (a whole lot), even if they're not exactly under your belt right now. I'm not going to AA right now, probably will eventually.
You'd be surprised at the encouragement and support the "oldies" give us newbies in this community. I know I couldn't have made my modest progress without their help - I never tire of thanking them.
Read a lot, post a lot

Hi and Welcome!
I did go in and out of AA
I spent 5 years earning a 1 year medallion.
The key for me was reading
"Under The Influence"
I used that information
Re connected to God and AA
and have not had another drink.
If you are interested ..here is
a link to excerpts

Thank you for the welcome.
I just read a book that only took 1 1/2 days.
It's about a woman that started an organization called moderation management (MM) for those that don't think they're alcoholics or don't want that classification to teach them to drink moderately, which I think is a dangerous thing actually.
I had never heard of MM until I read this book.
The woman that started this org. was lying and getting way out of control with her drinking and keeping a secret so that her org. wouldn't go under or the people wouldn't think it was B.S.
She eventually killed 2 people in a head-on when she was in a black out and went to prison for 4 1/2 years.
The book is called "Face to Face" and it's really a lot about the wife and mother of the two that were killed and her ability to forgive.
Both of those people and their families are from this area where I live.
The woman got out of jail and still to this day drinks but swears she'll never drive a car again. (time changes people's convictions sometimes and I hope she doesn't drink and drive again) She admits in the book she still drinks but she and the woman's whose loved ones that were killed have become friends now and stay in touch and wrote that book together.

I was going to meetings when I went back out and drank after 4 years sobriety. However, that was all I was doing as I had become terminally unique and didn't have to do all those things I used to.
I thought I'd tie one on and hop right back into the program.
Needless to say, that didn't happen and I failed miserably at being a social drinker.
Now I attend meetings and am active in my recovery!

Hi Anotherdrunk,,New to the forums myself. Used from 15 -35 got sober for 5 years without AA (have no idea how...chalk it up to divine intervention) Slipped back into addiction for 4 years and have been in the program for 2 1/2. The big mind-set change for me revolves around service. Both recieved and given. While working the steps I've found I need the fellowship to hold me accountable. Without AA I begin to run things my way, not a good idea. The program keeps me out of myself which is my main problem. Self-centeredness doesn't get me drunk but it always leads me to the alcohol which always does...
