Abilify WARNING

My psych doc ran some blood tests yesterday and my HbA1c was high. This is an indicator for diabetes. Come to find out Abilify can raise HbA1c and possibly cause permanent diabetes. For anyone taking this medication please talk to your doctor and request regular checks of your HbA1c as no one wants to develop diabetes. I hope I have not learned this the hard way and that this is reversible at this time.

Thanks for the warning. I know there is a label warning that it can cause high blood sugar, and my mom does have type II diabetes. I tested negative last year, but am still at risk. I have a doctor's appt set up for later this week.

I had no idea. As far as I've been concerned, it's a miracle drug for me. Thanks for the heads up, I will have to get checked out.

Well thanks for all your post.. Im hoping to be put on albilfy. I was on it 3 years ago it work. Im bipolar 1 with psychosis so changing meds is dangerous because it might throw me into psychosis. Well Im hoping for that and wishing to get off antipsychotics alltogether. What happenend I went to a church and ask them to pray for me because I was bipolar. They circled me and put there hands on me and then they told me to dump my meds down the toilet, and with the pressure of people 12step program for alcholics telling me all I had to do was believe a power greater then myself would heal me of bipolar 1. Well sounded good so I did it 3 days later showed up in a psycward with a police escort in a ambulance.Well thats how I got off abilify and compared to maxium dose of haldol abilify a GOD send. Anyways JHAY I hope what you say is true NANDM thanks 4 the heads up.pg552 BB works

I had forgotten to mention this to my doctor, but she brought it up herself last visit. Just bumping this thread because it's important to know. She is going to have me checked out 3 times a year.

Thanks for the warning.

I have been taking 10mg of Abilify a day for about 8 years.

I tested my blood sugar a few days ago and it was normal.

I agree with the person who said it was a miracle drug for them.

I have been completely well since I started taking it.

I will, however continue to keep an eye on my blood sugar.

All medications have some drawbacks I guess.

I'm off the abilify now so we'll see if anything happens with the diabetes.

Since the thread got bumped I will add that Seroquel has the same side effects and needs to be monitored in the same way.

Thanks for adding that, Morning Glory. My AD has been on a fairly high dose of seroquel for some time, and has to have labs done every three months. Her liver enzymes are now elevated, which is not good. I also asked her to get the testing done for diabetes. She's at high risk without the seroquel, so I wouldn't be surprised if she is diabetic.
