Don't do it, Tony. A drug is a drug, regardless of whether it is your DOC or not. Do call your sponsor in the morning (or NOW if it feels like too much - believe me, I have woken my sponsor up more than once).

Early sobriety can be a roller coaster. Just hang on, right now. You CAN do this.

If I had easy access to everything my DOC would be anything and everything. Unless its under strick doc. supervision I would not do it.

It might work for a few days then it'll stop working and the insomnia will be worse.

When I went up to the hospital to detox from everything, I begged my doc to at least let me stay on my anxiety meds so I could sleep and he said no. So I asked about ambien and he replied "no, you would abuse them too". He does have me take clomipramene in the evening. It is an old antidepressant that helps you sleep. That is all I am allowed to take. It sucks being an addict.

Difficulty sleeping is common problem in early recovery. Some non-drugs methods for a good night's sleep:
1. Cut down on caffeine and nicotine. No caffeine after 4 pm is my rule. Caffeine peaks 2-4 hours after you consume it and tapers off after about 6 hours.
2. Go to sleep at the same time every night if you can.
3. Don't take naps.
4. Get excercise during the day but not too close to bedtime.
5. Take a nice, relaxing, hot bath at night.
6. Eat meals high in carbohydrates and not too high in protein at night. Protein stimulates your body. Carbs send your blood sugar up, then it goes down and you get sleepy.
7. Have some warm milk or herb tea before bed.
8. Do some deep breathing and meditation.
9. Have sex: for stress relief!
